What Is a Hertz? A Simple Guide to Frequency (Hz)

When people mention 7.83 Hz, 432 Hz or 528 Hz, they are using the same unit: the hertz.

What a hertz is
One hertz (Hz) means one cycle per second. The name comes from Heinrich Hertz, the German physicist who demonstrated electromagnetic waves in the 1880s. 1 kHz equals 1,000 Hz.

Everyday examples
- About 1 Hz: a slow resting heartbeat (around 60 beats per minute).
- 7.83 Hz: the fundamental Schumann resonance — an extremely low-frequency electromagnetic wave between the Earth's surface and the ionosphere.
- 50 Hz or 60 Hz: household mains electricity (Europe / North America).
- 440 Hz: the A used to tune most modern instruments.

What you can hear — and what you cannot
Human hearing is roughly 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Below that range is infrasound. 7.83 Hz sits well below hearing, so it cannot be played as a tone on a speaker; a generator emits it silently through coils.
