*State the five main categories of a network activity requiring management.
Discuss these categories in the context of managing routing tables.
FCAPS
FCAPS is the categorical model of the working objectives of network management
The management functions for the OSI framework are classified into five management functional areas – FCAPS. FCAPS stands for Fault management, Configuration, Accounting, Performance and Security.
Fault Management:
- Fault Managements goal is to recognise, report, isolate, correct and log faults that occur in the network
With reference to routing tables, you will attempt to ensure that there are no route duplicates and if there are you will remove them
Configuration Management:
- Goals: Gather and store configurations from devices, simplify configuration of the device, track changes, configure circuits or paths through non-switched networks
- Allows a network manager to track which devices are on these managed networks and the hardware and software configuration of these devices
Ensure that you use the correct and most appropriate path for the network
Accounting Management:
- Goal: Gather usage statistics for users
- Regulates users or groups
- Help keep network performance at an acceptable level
Ensure that the paths in the routing table avoid unnecessary congestion and collisions
Performance Management:
- enables the manager to prepare the network for the future
- enables the manager to determine the efficiency of the current network
Security Management:
- Controls access to network resources so that information can not be obtained without authorisation
Responsible for user authentication and authorisation
