THREE copies of your report, plus your laboratory notebook, must be submitted to the Biology Undergraduate Office by 16.30 on Monday 21 April 2008, (Monday Week 1, Term 9).
*
You must submit your report in person and obtain an official receipt. Under no circumstances should you post your report through the mail (internal or otherwise), leave it with the porter's, or leave it in the Biology Undergraduate Office if it is unattended.
*
The department will arrange for your report to be professionally bound (after submission). The cost of this is £9 per student (2007 price, please note that if the price changes you will notified by the end of the Spring Term). You may pay for this in cash or by cheque (made payable to the University of York).
*
Penalties (see below) will be applied for late or incomplete submission of project reports.
*
You are advised to keep a personal (fourth) copy of your project report. You will need a copy for your oral presentation and if you are called for a viva with an external examiner. A bound copy will only be returned to you after the examination process is completed.
Penalties for late submission of your project report:
o
Late submissions will be penalised by the deduction of marks from the report section of your project after the report has been marked out of 100.
o
There will be a 2-mark penalty imposed for work handed in after the initial 16.30 deadline and before 16.30 on the following day; a further 2-mark penalty will be imposed for each subsequent day. (Please note that you be penalised for non-submission over the weekend period.)
o
Work handed in after 16.30 on the seventh day after the due date will not be accepted for examination. Please note this will be Monday 28 April 2008.
o If there are special mitigating circumstances why you are unable to submit by the deadline you should make your case in writing to the Chair of Examinations Committee (Dr Geoff Oxford, Biology and Dr Michael Schultze, Biochemistry) and enclose all relevant supporting documentation.
o
Computer failures and delays in printing will NOT normally count as special mitigating circumstances.
o
If, for whatever reason, you are not able to meet the deadline, it is essential that you approach your supervisor or project director BEFORE the deadline and through them discuss the case with the Chair of the Examinations Committee.
Penalties for excessive length of your project report:
+
Project reports of excessive length will be penalised by the deduction of marks after the paper has been marked out of 100.
+
Project reports should be between 4,000 and 8,000 words. The maximum permitted length is 8,000 words.
+
Projects longer than 8,000 words will be penalised 1 mark for every 200 extra words.
+
You MUST display a word count at the end of your project; misrepresentation of the number of words will be treated as academic misconduct. The word count should include main text, including reference citations, but not the title page, abstract, tables, figures, legends, reference lists, appendices or acknowledgements.

Failure to submit a Final Year Project - IMPORTANT NOTE
The Final Year Project is a COMPULSORY PART OF YOUR DEGREE. Failure to submit a Project Report by the stated deadlines will RESULT IN NO DEGREE BEING AWARDED.
A fail on the combined, appropriately weighted, Project Report and Project Director's marks will PRECLUDE THE AWARD OF AN HONOURS DEGREE irrespective of marks gained elsewhere
