During my time at university I have used a variety of programming languages and software development tools. During my second year I took a programming principles module. This module taught us the Java and C++ language and required me to program an object orientated text-based game for the final assignment. The c++ development environment we used in this module was “Borland C++”, I found it quite simple but very functional to use. As well as this I also completed an embedded systems module where we used c++ to program the Intel 8051 processor to execute simple instructions. Within this module we looked at bit wise operators and using the processors built in timer. The C++ programs I created were developed within the “Keil µVision” IDE and then loaded down into test hardware.I completed 2 modules on software engineering looking at the software development life cycle. Within this module we concentrated on the customer requirements, design, testing, and prototyping of a fire alarm security system. This module required us to work in development teams of four people for each of the stages. This module really showed how important the customer requirement and design stage is for large-scale life critical systems. Within this module we looked at a number of design techniques such as UML and risk assessment. I had previously used the unified modeling language within my internet systems module where we modified and tested an online banking system. Some of the modifications I made used java script and PHP for data validation before interacting with the SQL database. I have also helped with coding in many different languages in a variety of different situations. I have been paid for some of my coding work most of these have just been small things that were not working correctly or coding additional functionality. I have also helped people with there front-end of their websites and more commonly with integrating with a database or content management system. I also have some experience with the C language from running a public games server for a browser-based game. This was mainly for fun however it did require me learning to use Linux systems and how to compile the server code. I ran the game server for around 300 players from my home pc and although it could be tedious at times it taught me a lot about the difficulties and expectations of other people as well as making me into a competent Linux user.
