Perseus
Greek Myth written by Joel Skidmore
Danae and Perseus were locked up in a chest and was sent away far away of their city because Danae’s father, the king, had been told that Perseus would kill him. Perseus and Danae arrived in an island Seriphos where an odd king ruled. The king Polydectes had wanted to marry Danae. Polydectes had faked that he had married so that everyone can bring a present. Perseus and Danae, not being so rich, couldn’t find anything to give him. Perseus offered him his service and Polydectes said to bring the head of Medusa. He received items from the Gods and Nymphs and slayed Medusa. Now when Perseus showed Polydectes the head, Polydectes turned into stone.
Perseus promised Polydectes that he would bring the head of Medusa. Unfortunately, he had no sources and all he knew was she was somewhere far west. He was hopeless and would wander for years and years! The Gods, Athena and Hermes, offered their help of giving items like the winged shoe, shield, sword, and directions. They also gave him directions to a strange cave which there were three sisters who knew everything. Thanks to the Gods, he slayed Medusa and fulfilled his quest.
This story took place in Greece and Perseus searches islands for the Gorgon Medusa. The climate, time, and seasons are unknown. Perseus went to the Cave of the Graeae, Medusa’s island, and also to the nymphs. He also was raised in the island of Seriphos.
If this myth were to be in an alternate setting, everything will change because Greece has many islands and it would be hard to find an island where Medusa would live. Take United States of America, for instance, for an alternative setting. There is a major state with lots of islands, Hawaii. But in Greece, there are tens of islands all scattered around. Perseus would just have to visit Hawaii and just go around and find Medusa! In Greece, he would have to scatter around and actually search for Medusa.
