Hello, my name is Lee Kyung eun, but you can also call me Suzy.

I'm in the sixth grade at Nam-san elementary school.

I assume most of you have had a fever.

I also have had a fever whenever I had a cold or the stomach flu.

My temperature went up to 38 or 39 degrees celsius. I felt terrible and had a serious headache.

Considering that the normal body temperature is 36.5 degrees celsius, an increase of only 1.5 or 2 degrees may cause many problems to our body.

Recently, I read an article about global warming. Did you know that the globe temperature went up 0.5 degrees celsius during last 50 years?

Scientists think the global temperature will go up 2.5 to 3 degrees celsius during the next hundred years.

Why is the earth getting warmer?

What could happen if the temperature goes up?

Surprisingly, many scientists say that people make the earth warmer.

Scientists think that the things that we do send greenhouse gases into the air and those gases make our planet warmer.

Greenhouse gases are released when we use fossil fuels such as oil or coal.

These fossil fuels are used to make electricity.

I thought about things I did yesterday that use electricity.

After school, I went up to my apartment in the elevator.

I turned on the lights.

I played a computer game.

I watched television.

I used the microwave to heat up a slice of pizza.

I listened to music.

I turned on the air conditioner.

I felt terrible to find out all these activities I do without thinking about them make the earth warmer.

So what might happen if the global temperature goes up?

Many problems may occurr, including droughts, floods, health problems and starvation.

Of all problems, what worries me the most is the increase in sea levels.

If the weather is warmer, glaciers will melt. Melting glaciers add water to the ocean. By adding more water to the ocean, sea level will rise.

The sea level may rise higher than the coast and it will cause flooding.

Some islands may go under water.

What can we do to prevent these disasters?

Read books! We should read books and learn about the environment.

Save electricity! We should turn off the lights, television and computers when we are not using them.

Walk! Tell your family and friends to walk or take the bus instead of driving a car.

Plant trees! Trees help absorb some of the extra green house gasses.

I will do my best to try to prevent the earth from getting sick.

Do you want to join me? Do you want to help make a difference?

Thank you for listening to my speech.
