The days of the simple mail-only read-once-a-day communications between people are long gone. More and more people are not just exchanging messages or calling themselves, but also engaging in collaborative activities and doing stuff together.
To achieve this, the IM and VoIP features should be integrated right into the desktop experience. The user shouldn't have to think about 'opening a VoIP or IM application to speak to someone' just as she shouldn't have to worry about 'opening a file manager application to navigate the files'. The support should be invisible, blending into the desktop and available on user's whim.
Telepathy framework is one way of achieving this goal. One of the key ideas of the framework is allowing integration of these features into other applications. The back-end is solid and working, and now's the time to integrate it into the desktop.
This talk will show this integration can be easily done and give a few examples in Python.
