Clearing too much land, over 25 million acres of it, has had a substantial impact on Australia’s environment. It has caused the water table to be progressively rising throughout the wheat and sheep belt with many areas being soil eroded leaving it unable to grow crops on. The roots of many large trees which once got their water with their deep roots and kept the water table low are now gone. This means the water table has risen to only a few feet from the surface where the wheat gets its water. With this the top of the water table is covered by salt, and that infiltrates the soils leaving it unable to grow crops on. This soil erosion not only affects the crops but it also effects the underground storage on farms getting flooded. Another factor of this is that because of this, the sheep no longer have a steady source of food, as the grass cannot live with the amount of salt present in the soil.

These can be corrected with methods such as planting rows of trees across the farms for all farms in the district. These trees take water out of the land bringing the water table down. This is a long-term method to lower the water table. There are more short-term implications that can be done however these are a lot less reasonable and expensive. One of these methods is to dig a water passageway, which will direct the water out to a nearby lake.
