PART I
Dear Sir and Madam,
I am writing to inform you of my request for a scholarship and to motivate it to you.
My grade in Haute Ecole Albert Jacquard (Namur, Belgium) in graphics design is coming to his end I am planning to pursue a master in “Game Art and Animation” at the University of Abertay Dundee to further qualify in this area in which I am passionate since a long time ago and to increase my geographical mobility in my future job research. Follow studies in English is indeed acquire an effective tool of integration and participation in society and in professional life. These studies will allow me to be more mobile in my job, especially as the international mobility lie at the heart of concerns in matter of job as well as the removal of socio-economic barriers (therefore the value of a scholarship)
Summary of my student life
After successfully followed general studies which allowed me to acquire an “IT Specialist” diploma and some months of CISCO training I finally found the school which will allow me to learn what I am passionate since so many years: video games.
It is with this basis I started a grade at the Haute Ecole Albert Hacquard of Namur (HEAJ http://www.infographie-sup.be). Also I just finish a three months internship in the LoadInc Studio in Paris (http://www.loadinc.net) which improved me as long technical mastery as knowledge in company living. If I was able to get this internship it is because of my motivation the works I made throughout of these three years but also because of the excellent reputation of teaching in these subjects in HEAJ. So I can only be satisfied with this choice.
My internship has received only positive feedbacks (school and company) and confirms the next orientation of my curriculum.
Why make a Master?
The proposed Master in the UK consists of the achievement of a team project of a video game. To do this, I will have to actively participate in discussion groups, lectures, practical tutorials and private study. There is no doubt that many skills will be developed; I am thinking here about my creativity, at my solving problems capacity and to look at exercises which require detailed researches, at brainstorming and at concepts development.
In conclusion this specialization will allow me to develop more all my technical skills (modeling, texturing, animation, level design, lighting…). There are no doubts than this experience will also develop many human qualities.
Why was my choice focused on England and the University of Abertay Dundee?
The UK seems to be an excellent reference in matter of video game but also in improvement in English.
Let me explain. Before everything, the England is the English-speaking country the closest of Belgium, which restrict already the cost of these specialized post-graduate studies. My choice is as much pertinent as the English is the main language used in the video game universe. This is so an incontestable asset for the future.
PART II
The United Kingdom’s is generally well quoted in video game in a global level (we could say that the video game is the predilection sector). I know that a big part of global production is made of advergaming (advertise gaming like Kellogs video game and many more…) and video games for console portable (Nintendo DS, Sony PSP). The UK are a source of global blockbuster titles. The UK has built a vibrant and highly valuable games software industry. As the world’s third largest, it is well respected for his creativity and strength of the titles it produces.
Many of the world’s biggest publishers have bases in the UK. According to the BBC News website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4355913.stm), the interactive entertainment is doing financially better than film and television industries; this show once more the good place in the sector in the country.
The jobs offers and opportunities are many in animation, level design, game programming, 3D artist and many more… The job websites have plenty of announces which allow foreseeing the real possibilities to give me the chance to fit in quickly in the job world.
In 2007, the Haute Ecole Albert Jacquard visited England to see the University of Abertay Dundee. A partnership is going out of this which allows HEAJ students to follow their studies without have the entrance fee to pay. This is a chance I have to take, see my family situation and financial relatively precarious. Other initiatives in matter of video games happened in England! I will take as proof and only example one competition on “NEXT Next-Gen” games which will allow to the bests to be show in the new Ruskin Gallery in Cambridge. Once more, I cannot just see that the country is in constant ebullience in this sector, that it offer many opportunities and is more and more contact to begin new initiatives and partnerships. This is another important reason which motives my move.
Scholarship request: conclusions
In view of the arguments formulated above, this master and the country choice seems to be justified to me, appropriate and relevant. In addition, the perspective to work in the hearth of what we could call “a big part of the global elite” can only be exciting and promising. I am convinced that this year of specialization will allow me to achieve my dream and I aspire to only one thing: get the chance to be able to achieve them.
Study abroad, this is always an exceptional occasion to acquire knowledge over the cultural reality, economic, politic and social of the host country and can open the way or to a job in a company working on the international scene, or within the country (these are my goals).
Being confronted with other standards, to other teaching methods will promote without doubt the development of my critical sense, enkindle bringing into question and will support a biggest open mind of mine. This fabulous opportunity could in addition allow me to create a network of relations where in the future I could benefit in my professional and personal life.
Besides of the learning of a common practice of the language, a study visit abroad will support my self-knowledge, my resourcefulness, my capacity for accommodation… as well as the development of my main interest and my potential (as the CEO of LoadInc clearly explain in the internship report).
All these achievements will have a significant impact on my
so allowing me to improve my profile and to distinguish close to my future employers.
