I am applying for this scholarship because I am a talented, successful student. I want to attend a great college that will prepare me to change the lives of others. College is going to cost money, though. My family cannot afford this expense, so I am looking for financial assistance.

I have been considered a gifted student my whole life. Through high school, I have carried a high grade point average. I have participated in marching band, jazz band and full orchestra. I have won first place in math and Science Olympiad regionals, and done extremely well at state competitions. I attend the Missouri Academy, where I am earning an Associate of Science degree as I finish my last two years of high school. I plan to study biomedical engineering and work on insulin pumps for diabetics. I want to attend a great university so that I can receive the best education and help improve the lives of others. Financial aid will remove a burden from my family and my future.

My family gets by, but we are not terribly wealthy. Our situation has worsened with medical bills. I am a type one diabetic, and I have several prescriptions I regularly fill. My mother is also on assorted medications. The biggest cost to us, though, is my father. In 2006, my father was in a motorcycle accident. He was lucky to have survived and spent several months in the hospital. He now has a prosthetic left leg and is on many prescriptions. I don’t know how much it has cost us, but it has cost a lot. He is now disabled and on Social Security, which brings in less than his job did. My mother has actually taken on a part-time job outside of her full-time job to help my family. Though they want to help as much as possible, my parents cannot contribute much money to my college education.

I am applying for this scholarship so that I can have the future I deserve based on my talent and success. I wish my financial status was not a burden that might keep me from helping others. Unfortunately, the cost of college is too much for my family. I hope that this scholarship, and others I receive, will enable me to attend a great school and receive a great education.
