1.How is the basis of a rabbet joint made?
It is made by cutting a recess in one, or both, of the pieces to be jointed together. The recess that is made can be formed on the end of the piece, or the edge of it.
2.How is shoulder depth determined?
If the rabbet joint will be assembled with glue, then the shoulder depth should come out to be equal to two thirds of the thickness of the stock. If nails or screws are being used to assemble the rabbet joint, the shoulder depth should be reduced to one half of the thickness. If the thickness of the board is less than an inch, the measurement should be increased to an inch when made into a rough out.
3.If the cut is along the edge, what should be used, and how?
If the cut for the shoulder of the rabbet joint will be formed along the edge, a rabbet plane should be used. The rabbet plane has improved performance for this kind of rabbet joint for several reasons. It contains an adjustable fence, and a depth gauge. These two thinks help you control the depth and the width of the cut being formed for the shoulder of the joint. After adjusting the fence and gauge, you can use a blade for a fine, precise cut. The plane should be placed on a flat surface, being held tightly by a clamp, to make sure it does not move while working. Several “test cuts” should be made before securing a satisfactory cut.
4.What is needed for a rough out?
Actual dimensions, and approximate measurements are needed.
5.What are the approximate dimensions for a rough layout?
For a rough layout, several margins should be used to draw the layout, to approximate the size. For thickness, a one sixteenth margin should be added for the rough layout. If the thickness is less than an inch, it should be brought up to an inch. For the width, one fourth extra must be added. For length, one half inch should be added.
6.What is the best tool used form an end grain cut of a rabbet joint?
It is difficult in a rabbet joint to form an end grain cut without the use of a simple jig.
7.In the Jewelery Box, how many pieces were there, and what were they?
There were thirteen pieces. There were two sides, a front and a back, a top and a bottom, four legs (each consisting of two pieces, but counting as one for simplicity), a cap (the hole), the peg, and a key.
