Interview
Q:What do you think the general idea of the American Dream is?
A:I believe that the "American Dream" as it is termed is in fact merely a slight modification on that presented in the Great Gatsby -- a hedonic fantasy of the pleasures of simulacra, from fake friends and fake money and fake booze to fake women and fake men in fake movies on television networks controlled by corporations (which are fake people, legally speaking), multinational corporations (which are fake groups of fake people turned into a single fake person legally), and so on -- the live of blissful ignorance of imitation, a land of plastic wind-up toys and plastic wind-up people.
Q:What is your personal dream/aspiration?
A:My dream is to "fix" the world -- to change perspectives through example and debate, instead of through marketing, NLP, surrepticious modifications of public image, and dogmatic facist-militaristic violence. I would like to change the world through opening new doorways and showing people what can be done, and how neat it is to explore all these new worlds and new perspectives, instead of futily requiring people do do things or see things my way. I would like to do that through primarily constructive means -- though certainly, the means are not PC. Sometimes a little chaos can shake things up a bit in people's minds, change perspectives, open the mind without any real harm to people or property. The biggest obstacle, really, is fame. Anyone who sets out to change the world and really puts their mind to it WILL make an impact; the problem is that when someone sets out to change the world, they become famous, and their public image becomes a totally different person than who they really are. A good example is Marshal Mcluhan: he was brilliant, a genius, and created much of the modern field of Media Studies, while simulaneously influencing postmodernism, surrealism, ontology, linguistics, philosophy, and so on. Yet, what is he remembered for? "The Medium is the Message". Hardly anyone knows what it means, anymore, and not many more really understood it at the time, despite it being quoted left and right. Therein lies the danger, and this way lies madness.
Q:Do you feel your aspirations/dreams have changed?
A:My dreams and aspirations have changed only in implementation details, not in aims and theme.
Q:Do you feel you are living out your dreams?
A:Yes.
