<mchua_> isforinsects__: ffm asked if the zine was up and if we should use it - olpczine.org
<isforinsects__> ffm: it's been like that for over a week.
<ffm> isforinsects__: I ask per the topic "http://www.olpczine.org/ suggestions welcome. Editors please register."
<isforinsects__> And feel free to poke around in it. But we're not ready to go live with it until next week IMO
<isforinsects__> I am all free next week
<ffm> isforinsects__: is it possible for me to import my blogger posts?
<isforinsects__> So I will be dumping a lot of time into it.
<isforinsects__> ffm: do your sub blog yes, and from there we can import individual blogs to the main Zine
<ffm> isforinsects__: so where will my posts appear? (I need what I blog to be viewable, even outside the zine)
<ffm> if they aren't imported into the zine?
<isforinsects__> ffm: it's set up so each user *can* have their own sub domain.
<isforinsects__> But from my limited amount of poking around, its looking like Drupal was the wrong way to go.
<mchua_> isforinsects__: can subdomains be redirects?
<mchua_> isforinsects__: for instance, mel.olpczine.org --> blog.melchua.com/olpc or something with apache handling url rewrites
<ffm> isforinsects__: convert to wordpress then? better now then when we have 500 posts...
<mchua_> that way "other blogging platforms are supported" ;)

<mchua_> ffm: i'm not sure if that would be an acceptable solution for your blogger issue
<ffm> mchua_: I'd like to move away from blogger.
<mchua_> but we can easily pull everyone into a planet, or everyone's sub-feed (with posts we tag as Really Good) into a metafeed
<mchua_> ffm: right, but "move away from blogger" doesn't have to mean "move onto olpczine installation" - you can move to wordpress.com, etc
<mchua_> ffm: +1 for "move away from blogger" though
<isforinsects__> mchua_: non elegant and non support so far
<mchua_> did that myself a few months back
<Ian_Daniher> g'morning all
<ffm> mchua_: there are ways to import to wordpress, and some hackish ways to import to drupal.
<Ian_Daniher> +1 to snowdays
<ffm> Ian_Daniher: morning. Same here.
<ffm> +1
<mchua_> ffm: oh yes, I know - just throwing it out as another possible "implementation option"
<mchua_> g'morning, Ian_Daniher
<mchua_> isforinsects__: non-elegant? what are your objections? :)
<Ian_Daniher> isforinsects: I read scrollback on your convo about your silos
<mchua_> isforinsects__: the goal is to provide volunteers with a blog under an official-lookin' domain type thingy, right?
<mchua_> isforinsects__: that doesn't have to mean "We All Use Drupal."
<Ian_Daniher> isforinsects: so many good uses
<ffm> mchua_: they (teachers) want something we don't host ourselves, due to "oh then we have to constantly keep it open".
<isforinsects__> mchua_ the goal in my opinion is to have an actual community blog/zine on the front page.
<ffm> isforinsects__: +1
<isforinsects__> Volunteers and contributors and even kids can have subdomains to host their blogs.
<mchua_> ffm: right, those folks can use drupal if they want, or something else
<ffm> mchua_: and hosting is the easiest way to do so.
<isforinsects__> Which is a very robust, and complete system under wordpress.
<mchua_> ffm: right. i'm not saying hosting == bad, just that hosting != only option.
<ffm> isforinsects__: he does have a point. we need to provide options for those who hate it.
<isforinsects__> The multi user and multi domain system under drupal does not look like it will scale.
<ffm> isforinsects__: *hate wordpress.
<isforinsects__> what's wrong with wordpress?
<ffm> isforinsects__: well at least mod_security is already installed.
<ffm> isforinsects__: nothing, I like it, but not everyone shares my opinion. vi vs emas.
<mchua_> isforinsects__: I personally adore wordpress, but I know very, very accomplished hackers that loathe it like the fury
<ffm> *emacs
<mchua_> isforinsects__: they wrote their own blog software, etc. want something minimalistic, hackable, security, whatever.
<mchua_> isforinsects__: like ffm said, vi vs emacs.
<isforinsects__> Excuse my abreviation, but LOL. My audience is hardly hackers.
<mchua_> isforinsects__: and OSS is all about choice - so if we can give people choice with a simple apache redirect, why not?
<mchua_> isforinsects__: oh, I know. but nontech users vary in their love/hate of platforms, too.
<isforinsects__> The entire point of this domain is because the non-hackers don't have enough of a voice.

<mchua_> isforinsects__: And giving them an easy path to get a blog is Good. The only thing I'm saying is don't make that path the only one.
<ffm> ttuttle: what's your opinion on the subject?
<Ian_Daniher> mchua_: http://www.electronics-lab.com/blog/?p=1224
<mchua_> ttuttle: I'll pastebin the scrollback if you want.
<isforinsects__> mchua: and I disagree again, this isn't about choice. There needs to be active policing of this domain for obvious spam. People using it for complete non-olpc purposes
<isforinsects__> These need to be excluded in some way.
<ttuttle> ffm: What was the question?
<mchua_> isforinsects__: you'll still have to apply for a domain. your feed will still be pulled, and watched. you can cut off someone's domain, their info flow *into* the zine, at any time.
<ttuttle> If it's whether blogs on olpczine should have other stuff -- no. They should be OLPC only.
<ffm> ttuttle: should we give out subdomains as redirects .
<ttuttle> ffm: NO!
