What does a college education mean to me?
In short, a good college education means on very important thing to me, that I will be able to have my dream career as a computer programming professor at a university.
Since my first day of school, I always had trouble deciding on what to choose as a career, my parents simply said “let him take his time”, but in contrast, I was deeply worried. Was it not true that from an young age I would have picked some sort of dream to chase after? I never knew that feeling. That is until I met my High School programming teacher. His name was Mr. Mackoul and to this day continues to be a good friend and spectacular role-model, and to this day still works at Long Island City HS.
When I was in his class, I felt at ease, there was no worry in his eyes when he spoke, he simply knew that everyone in his class would understand some part of the complex ideas that he was teaching, and that the better students, me included, would be able to help the rest of the class. His idea worked flawlessly for the most part; me and a few others were able to basically reinforce the ideas that he had tried to instill in all of us. What he did was amazing, he let all of us become teachers in a way which allowed us all to collaborate and conquer some very difficult projects.
After I had left his class, I still felt the urge to learn the systems and the intricacies of programming. What was most important, however, was that Mr. Mackoul left me with the burning desire to teach the way I had done throughout the time I was in his class. I wanted to become an expert of programming, and most importantly I wanted to culture minds like myself into becoming seasoned programming pros that may come back and help repeat the cycle. I knew the only way I could do that and mold my dream into reality was to get a college education that would help me teach.
Making my dream into a reality is why a college education is so important to me.
