##freebsd
<gongoputch>	I will not and you can't make me.
	<Asako>	lol
	<Asako>	it's what I use
<comperr>	Asako: I've been trying that
	<comperr>	and it fails
<gongoputch>	Asako: I set it up like this http://bsdtips.utcorp.net/mediawiki/index.php/Run_Esd,_Arts,_Jack_and_OSS
<code64>	eh i was thinking about trying to run a desktop bsd on my desktop...but i dunno :/
	<Asako>	cool, thanks
<Asako>	looks like amarok won't play if jackd is running
<gongoputch>	code64: the DT tools are in ports too
<gongoputch>	code64: I just use FBSD as my desktop
<code64>	well i just got freebsd up and running on my laptop with wireless working last night thanks to jpalmer
	<gongoputch>	yay
<code64>	wireless was the main thing but yeah i am stoked about that
	<gongoputch>	what was the bug-a-boo?
	<code64>	edit /boot/loader.conf and /etc/rc.conf
<Asako>	it's just annoying because only one thing can have sound open
	<comperr>	Asako: I have linux-firefox
<comperr>	and it won't intall flash
	<mulvane_>	I use win32 firefox
<code64>	i have that saved in a txt file and the whole irc chat from last night in case i have more problems (or re-install) lol
<Asako>	comperr, I had to do it by hand
<gongoputch>	Asako: did you READ that article?
	<Asako>	yeah, I'm reading it
<comperr>	Asako: what did you have to do ?
<gongoputch>	Asako: I have 3 things running sound
<gongoputch>	you can set up more
<Asako>	comperr, download the flash7 tar file
<code64>	yeah but the thing with the desktop is that someone else uses it too but just to check their internet
<comperr>	Asako: I tried that - but it says your os is not suported
<Asako>	extract it and copy the plugin files to the linux-firefox plugin directory
	<comperr>	o
<code64>	so that can be done on anyone
<Asako>	yeah, you need to find a mirror
<Asako>	or use adobe's ftp server
	<comperr>	aksis: I did use adobe's
<Asako>	I can copy it to my server if you need it
	<Asako>	http://watters.ws/rpms/install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz
	<comperr>	Asako: I got it
	<comperr>	thanks :D
	<comperr>	now for sound hda
	<Asako>	no problem
<Asako>	yeah, I'm trying to fix sound so I can watch videos and use amarok at the same time
	* comperr	I hate that 6.2 doesn't support it
	<AcidSlep>	allo!
	<code64>	hey AcidSlep
<gongoputch>	Asako: are the vchans working?
<AcidSlep>	I got those scsi drives working! yay!
<gongoputch>	to allow multiple apps sound access?
<AcidSlep>	what are you working on now code64?
<code64>	well i am good to go on my laptop atm but i am looking to install something on the comp i am on now
	<AcidSlep>	install "something"
	<AcidSlep>	like a new os?
	<code64>	oh sorry lol
	<code64>	yeah
	<AcidSlep>	coo
	<code64>	either desktopbsd,freebsd,or pc-bsd
	<mwc>	Damn
<mwc>	Got this this printing almost working
<code64>	i am thinking something desktopy because someone else has to use it too
<AcidSlep>	you can make freebsd desktopy
	<AcidSlep>	its just
<mwc>	except that everything is transposed too far up the page (bout a quarter inch or so)
	<AcidSlep>	harder
<mwc>	anybody seen that happen before (using foomatic-rip as the input-filter)
<code64>	yeah i know but i don't want all that extra work
	<AcidSlep>	mwc: atleast it works
	<AcidSlep>	yeah
<code64>	so i am deciding between desktopbsd and pc-bsd
<mwc>	AcidSlep: yeah, but it cuts out a coupla lines of text
<AcidSlep>	ive found desktop bsd to be alright
	<code64>	how bout pc-bsd?
	<AcidSlep>	never tried it
<Asako>	hmm, looks like the xine port doesn't have jack support
	<AcidSlep>	Asako: for what?
<code64>	in fact i don't even think the pc-bsd live cd worked for me from what i recall :/
	<Asako>	AcidSlep, amarok
	<code64>	a lot of them don't actually
<code64>	i think there is something wrong with this computer
<gongoputch>	code64: if you install FBSD and add applications, why do you need an "idiot proof" install? You are already past the idiot part ....
<code64>	because this computer isn't just for my use
<Asako>	once the desktop is running does it matter?
<gongoputch>	Asako: you can just tell each naieve OSS app to use a different /dev/dspX.Y device
<Asako>	yeah, amarok only lets you set /dev/dsp
<gongoputch>	code64: but what is the difference WHAT installs it once you are running it?
<AcidSlep>	lol why do you want amarok?
	<code64>	huh?
	<Asako>	because the interface rules
<gongoputch>	Asako: you could use a shim then, e.g. esddsp
<Helio>	code64: listen to me; if it's a FreeBSD 6.x release it's using, your rum card /will not work/ and it has nothing to do with what it is.
<AcidSlep>	it does not look that special...
	<Asako>	yeah
<code64>	oh no this isn't for my laptop i got that taken care of
<code64>	but yeah i do have to make sure that card works...
<Asako>	I'd still have to rebuild the port most likely
<code64>	this will be another bsd project
	<code64>	and 7.0 rc1 is out
	<AcidSlep>	hehe
<code64>	thats whats on my laptop
	<Asako>	my laptop runs AntiX
	<comperr>	[comperr@starfx ~]$ linux-firefox
	<comperr>	Illegal instruction (core dumped)
<code64>	my laptop has no X at all but what's antiX? no X ?
<comperr>	Asako: thats what I get from flash
<code64>	antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy to install linux live CD distribution based on MEPIS for Intel-AMD x86 compatible systems.
<Asako>	comperr, are you on a 64 bit system?
	<code64>	traitor!
	<comperr>	Asako: yes
<Asako>	that could be the problem
<comperr>	Asako: it should run 32 bit programs
	<Asako>	is linux-firefox 32 bit?
	<comperr>	I think so
<code64>	it's 8bit kickin it old school NES style
	<code64>	:-p
<Helio>	6.3-RC2 has started hitting mirrors
<Asako>	I can't really help much, all I did was copy the plugin files over
<comperr>	I should probaly get some kind of live-cd just for flash :(
<Asako>	restart firefox, everything is fine
<code64>	you can call the live cd : where did it go?!
	<code64>	because it's FLASH!
	<code64>	lol
	<Asako>	lol
<code64>	or call it "say cheese"
<Asako>	I wish gnash worked better
	<comperr>	lol Asako
	<Asako>	comperr, I'm serious
<Asako>	we need a decent open source flash player
	<reverser>	hi
<reverser>	the fonts in firefox looks very very bad in freebsd
	<reverser>	and its tiny
<reverser>	i know u can increase text size with alt + but it doesnt help
	<reverser>	still looks bad
	<reverser>	any ideas?
	<comperr>	Asako: I fully agree
<Zelest>	reverser, cd /usr/ports/x11-fonts/webfonts/ && make install clean
	<reverser>	thank you very much
	<reverser>	brb, reboot
	<AcidSlep>	i win!
	<AcidSlep>	oh wait
	<AcidSlep>	wt sorry
<gongoputch>	so, turns out timemachine is not nearly as impressive as I thought. It does not backup files AS you edit them, just runs at intervals and backs up changes.
	<Asako>	so it's a cron job
<gongoputch>	basically what rsync --backup does
<Asako>	be cool if they used something like LFS
<gongoputch>	Asako: to my understanding, essentially : Yes
<Asako>	does anything besides NetBSD have that?
<gongoputch>	it would be cool if they used something like kqueue and backed files up AS you editted them
	<gongoputch>	what is LFS?
	<Asako>	logged file system
<Asako>	you can roll back the whole FS to any point in time
	<gongoputch>	that is NICE
<Asako>	makes file writes kind of slow
<gongoputch>	for "timemachine" like backups on FBSD, you could write a snapshot, wait until X time later, mount it, compare the live FS to the snapshot, save the difference, delete the snapshot, go to beginning
	<gongoputch>	OR for mirror + differences :
<reppie>	LFS makes writes very fast
	<gongoputch>	rsync --backup --backup-directory=/backup/differences/2007/12/30
<reppie>	i wish i was as cool as bruce lee
	<Asako>	me too
	* gongoputch	makes reppie as cool as bruce lee
<Asako>	I may start taking taekwondo soon
	<gongoputch>	there
<reppie>	i want to do a martial art
<Asako>	reppie, yeah, they're nice to know
<Asako>	think I'll start with taekwondo and take some judo later
<mulvane_>	GRAH!!! I just want compiz to work..
<gongoputch>	can you -union mount a nullfs ?
	* comperr	takes jujitsu
<comperr>	and I have taken shotokon and krav-maga
	<Asako>	ITF style of course
<code64>	i want to do kung fu
<Asako>	better join a shaolin temple
	<code64>	how come?
<Asako>	shaolin kung fu is the best in the world
	<code64>	yeah i'm asian!
<reppie>	Asako how old are you
	<code64>	cauc asian hahahaha
	<Asako>	28.5
<reppie>	and you never did a martial art?
	<Asako>	nope
	<reppie>	i c
<reppie>	why do you have this gay nickname anyway? :(
<code64>	no one gets that joke ? (i thought it was pretty clever)
	<Asako>	reppie, no idea
	<reppie>	code64 ..
<Asako>	my other name was taken
	<code64>	yes reppie?
	<code64>	lol
<reppie>	Asako what's your other name?
	<Asako>	Blackknight
	<comperr>	what joke ?
<mulvane_>	Its obviously to the point I should give up....
	<ruinevil>	hello
	<ritalin>	hai
	* ruinevil	has purchase https://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665243973
	<mwc>	Weeee, printing works
<mwc>	Asako: fwiw, I studied TKD for about 6 months
	<Asako>	yay
	<Asako>	mwc, is it good?
<mwc>	On reflection, I think I'd rather learn a martial art that focuses on breaking holds
	<Asako>	yeah
<mwc>	TKD is virtually entirely striking
<Asako>	that's why you train in grappling too
<jpaetzel>	tkd is a fun sport
	<mwc>	Now, TKD looks cool
	<Asako>	judo, BJJ, whatever
<mwc>	I just don't see ever using striking
<jpaetzel>	not very useful against virtually any other fighting style.
<mwc>	If I'm in the position to strike, I'll just flee
	<Asako>	I dunno
	<ruinevil>	its intesive tho
	<mwc>	if I can't flee, then I need to break a hold
	<mwc>	then I flee
	<reverser>	hi
	<ruinevil>	hello
<Asako>	be nice if we had a krav maga school around
	<jpaetzel>	i'm a purple belt in tkd
<reverser>	i installed the webfonts thing, but still the fonts aren't good
<mwc>	There's a krav maga school in this city actually
	<mwc>	about a 20 minute bike ride
<Asako>	yeah, problem with TKD is somebody can just grab your leg
<jpaetzel>	the hopkido guys we train with have far more real-world skills
	<mwc>	On a serious note...
<reverser>	the firefox fonts look very bad :P
	<Asako>	yes they do
	<mwc>	I've installed firefox from ports (7.0RC1)
	<mwc>	and it won't run
	<ruinevil>	get the ms corefonts
	<ruinevil>	>.>
<mwc>	firefox just dies with not even a peep to stderr
<reverser>	how do i get it? i've only used freebsd for 6h
	<mwc>	same with the package
	<reverser>	never used linux/unix before
<jpaetzel>	mwc: will it start as root?
<mwc>	jpaetzel: haven't tried... do that now
	<mwc>	jpaetzel: it does
<ruinevil>	now run it as a user
	<ruinevil>	>.>
<reverser>	ruinevil, where can i find "ms corefonts"?
<ruinevil>	i bet itll work now
	<ruinevil>	hmmmm
<mwc>	ruinevil: won't run, same failure mode as befor
	<mwc>	e
<ruinevil>	doesnt appear that freebsd has it
<jpaetzel>	I think the fix is rm -rf ~/.firefox
	<ruinevil>	i guess webfonts
<ruinevil>	you do own a copy of windows right
<mwc>	jpaetzel: in my homedir? doesn't exist
	<ruinevil>	somewhere
<reverser>	is that what i need to type?
	<ruinevil>	http://www.freshports.org/x11-fonts/webfonts
	<reppie>	http://zip.4chan.org/a/src/1199047668807.jpg
	<moshisushi>	reppie: 4chan ska dö!
	<jpaetzel>	mwc: it's some dotdir...maybe .mozilla
<reverser>	how do i copy a text from bitchx?
<mwc>	jpaetzel: it was indeed mozilla
<mwc>	thank you, now i need to go have a shower
<ruinevil>	what is your console program?
	<reverser>	xterm i think
<mwc>	and wipe away the shame of having run firefox as root
	<ruinevil>	highlight it?
<mwc>	they don't make water scalding enough ;(
	<ruinevil>	ask jpaetzel
	<ruinevil>	i dont use xterm
<reverser>	i've already installed that port /x11-fonts/webfonts but still it looks bad
	<reverser>	and i modified the xorg.conf
	<reverser>	i added one line
<mwc>	reverser: you should be able to use the standard X copying routine
<mwc>	highlight the text in one window
<reverser>	how do i do that?
<reverser>	i can't copy and paste to firefox
<ruinevil>	do you have antialiasing on?
<mwc>	using the left muse button
<mwc>	click and drag in the xterm
	<reverser>	not working
<mwc>	then to paste it, just middle click on the firefox
<mwc>	*on the text field in firefox
<reverser>	now it's working. thank you.
<reverser>	sorry if i'm repeating myself but do anyone have any idea how i can get the fonts to look better?
	<reverser>	(in firefox)
<reverser>	i can take a print screen and show you
	<mwc>	sure
	<reverser>	how do i take a prnt-screen?
	<reverser>	i can google, sorry
	<reverser>	im just lazy today
	<ruinevil>	antialiasing makes stuff pretty~
	<ruinevil>	http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-fonts.html#ANTIALIAS
	<reverser>	okay
	<ruinevil>	http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeType
<ruinevil>	that may also peak your interests
	<reverser>	advaced sh*t :p
	<ruinevil>	pique?
	<ruinevil>	meh
	<ruinevil>	i fail
<reverser>	how do i get the sound working?
<reverser>	do i need to download any drivers?
<spaz>	reverser, no, this isn't windows
	<spaz>	:P
	<spaz>	gimme a minute
<reverser>	and if yes, how to i know which drivers i need?
	<reverser>	hehe, okay :)
	<spaz>	kldload snd_driver; cat /dev/sndstat
<Asako>	snd_driver locks up my box
<spaz>	then kldunload snd_driver; kldload (whatever driver works)
	<spaz>	Asako, not here
<spaz>	but i load the proper driver :P
	<Asako>	me too
<ruinevil>	or you can read your system specs
<Asako>	reverser, what kind of sound card?
<ruinevil>	and figure out what you need
	<ruinevil>	>.>
<Asako>	and check out the handbook section on sound
<mwc>	I was really, really impressed with how sound was handled under freebsd
<mwc>	and I thought ALSA was brainless
	<Belliash>	Your FTP down?
	<spaz>	heh
	<ruinevil>	oss is more so
	<spaz>	yes, oss is ugh
<mwc>	nah, I love how the kernel does mixing
	<spaz>	>_>
	<spaz>	heh
	<Belliash>	spaz: from spaznet?
	<mwc>	and the vchans
	<spaz>	Belliash, ages ago
<spaz>	i shut it down a while ago due to lack of activity
	<spaz>	wait...you're kash, aren't you?
	<Belliash>	no, i'm not :P
	<spaz>	hmm
<reverser>	spaz what do i need to type afterkldunload snd_driver; kldload?
	<spaz>	reverser, cat /dev/sndstat
<spaz>	and see what sound driver you should load
<Belliash>	can anyone tell me what's wrong with ftp.freebsd.org ?
	<spaz>	Belliash, worksforme (R)
<reverser>	okay thank you so much
	<Asako>	Belliash, it's probably busy
	<spaz>	reverser, sound works now?
<spaz>	reverser, kldload'ing snd_driver is a bit of a kludge, you should find your proper sound card
<spaz>	and load that from now on
	<spaz>	:)
<mwc>	reverser: and put it in /boot/loader.conf
	<mwc>	sound_load="YES" # Digital sound subsystem
	<mwc>	snd_ich_load="YES" # Intel ICH
<mwc>	replace snd_ich with your actual driver
	<reverser>	thank you but i don't understand 100%
	<reverser>	is newpcm my driver?
<spaz>	Belliash, oh i remember you now!
<code64>	Belliash: i had the same problems
	<reverser>	] [##freebsd(+cnrt)]
	<reverser>	[Lag 0] [O/1 N/299 I/0 V/0 F/0] [U:a:S:b:h]
	<code64>	use another ftp
	<spaz>	#arcon, wasn't it?
	<reverser>	[##freebsd] prometh# kldload snd_driver; cat /dev/sndstat
	<reverser>	FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm)
	<Belliash>	spaz: right
<Belliash>	spaznet was nce but too many netsplits
<code64>	Belliash: for some reason if you notice if you're trying to go to that server like doing pkg_add -r or something it is ftp://ftp.freebsd.org
	<spaz>	Belliash, we fixed those
<spaz>	but too little too late
	<code64>	which doesn't exist
<spaz>	so we called it quits
<code64>	just choose a different ftp
<code64>	same thing happend to me
<Asako>	you can change the pkg_root
<Belliash>	spaz: i think You can join your server to freenode as U wish
<reverser>	how do i save this conversation?
	<spaz>	Belliash, nah
	<spaz>	i haven't the time anymore
	<code64>	copy/paste ?
	<Belliash>	btw: what is LiveFS?
<spaz>	i'll just sit quietly as an observer and not a ruler
	<spaz>	livefs?
	<spaz>	never heard of it
	<code64>	mean either
<reverser>	how can i copy all the text? because i can't scroll all the text
	<Belliash>	ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/ISO-IMAGES/7.0/7.0-RC1-amd64-livefs.iso
	<code64>	live file system
	<code64>	?
	<Asako>	live cd sounds like
	<Belliash>	has only 380MB
	<Belliash>	280*
	<code64>	http://user.berklix.org/~dgw/
<reverser>	sorry for my dumbness, i'veonly used freebsd for like 6h and i'm _totally_ new to *nix
	<reverser>	:P
	<ruinevil>	what about linux?
	<code64>	what about it?
	<reverser>	never used it
<ruinevil>	how did you install freebsd reverser
<code64>	reverser: i chose bsd over linux
	<reverser>	bootonly
	<code64>	i am a newb too
	<reverser>	okay, cool :)
	<reverser>	i found a tutorial on freebsd.se (.se = sweden)
<code64>	yeah i did my research and i used ubuntu for like a day like a year ago lol
<code64>	and didn't find it interesting except for tux racer (you gotta admit that game is cool) lol
	<reverser>	heh, nice. =)
<code64>	but yeah i read up a lot about BSD and linux
<ruinevil>	did you install a desktop environment?
	<code64>	i tried openbsd for a bit
<code64>	didn't get too far into it but i set up internet and a windows manager
	<reverser>	hehe, i see
	<reverser>	i installed fluxbox
<code64>	it's actually on my mac still right now, thinking about trying to put freebsd powerpc port on it
<reverser>	ok, håll käften nu tack. :p
<code64>	yeah but i like freebsd and the community is really great
	<Asako>	can't beat the docs
<reverser>	ok, i don't know yet. but i find freebsd pretty advanced :P
<code64>	and yeah documentation is crazy
<reverser>	but with a great documenation
	<Asako>	yeah, it's advanced
	<Asako>	that's why I like it
<code64>	well yeah but also read up on freebsd
<Asako>	I do miss some features that Linux has
	<mwc>	Asako: like what?
<code64>	but..people don't switch to freebsd or linux (well maybe linux) to double click icons on their desktop
<reverser>	how do i copy all the text in a terminal window?
<Asako>	LVM, but I just need to learn GEOM
<code64>	if they did that they'd stick with windows
	<Asako>	software raid, etc.
<code64>	it's to feel the raw power of the command line!
<mwc>	Asako: isn't Vinum more comparable to LVM?
	<nainef>	w00t
	<Asako>	vinum is dead
<mwc>	Oh, didn't see that in the handbook when I read it
<code64>	that's where all the great hackers come from not "double clicking" an icon
<Asako>	it was removed in FreeBSD 6
<code64>	oh and in the handbook chapter 3 is basic unix stuff
	<code64>	for new people :D
	<code64>	like you and me
<Asako>	there is a volume manager, I just don't know it
<reverser>	the reason to why i installed c is because im trying to learn c
	<nainef>	hehehe
<reverser>	and because its challenging (spelling?) and funny with new things
<Asako>	I'm going to build a RAID 10 NAS with FreeBSD
	<Asako>	all I need is about $600
<nainef>	it gets cheaper all the time ..
<reverser>	hmm, i need to buy a faster computer. i started to compile pidigin for like an hour ago and its still working :P
<code64>	hey reverser also lucky for you a brand new book came out which i got yesterday Absolute FreeBSD 2nd edition
<reverser>	oh really? :) i'll take a look at it
<slaytanic>	gvinum is the VM now.
<code64>	well that's because you're instyalling from ports (which people say is the right way to go just takes a while)
<slaytanic>	And you can use GEOM to mirror/stripe/concat drives.
<code64>	but there is also packages
<mwc>	reverser: it's not just pidgin, it's also all its dependencies
<code64>	pre-compiled binaries only thing is you can't customize it as much as ports
<code64>	(i have learned a lot in the less than a week i've used freebsd i just realized) lol
	<Asako>	it never ends
	<reverser>	hehe
	<Asako>	I've been running linux/bsd for over 10 years
<Asako>	still learn new things every day
<reverser>	it's always funny to learn new things
<reverser>	but i'm kind of mentally retarded so it takes me very long time to learn new things

	<reverser>	thank you code64! :)
	<code64>	np
<reverser>	can you please tell me how i copy every line of text in a terminal window?
<code64>	if you're using fluxbox you should be able to copy/paste in an xterm i thought..
<Asako>	yeah, just select the text
<reverser>	yes but i can't mark all the lines
<nainef>	man I am so glad I tweaked my kernel for this older notebook, this thing is a lot faster now...
<Asako>	reverser, you can't drag the mouse?
<reverser>	Asako: i can, but i can't mark more then a few lines
	<nainef>	whoa
	<reverser>	code64 : i'll take a look at it :)
<Asako>	yeah, you have to scroll up and copy the rest
	<nainef>	that is extremly odd
<Asako>	or set your irc client to log
	<reverser>	Asako: i can't
	<Asako>	huh?
	<Asako>	shift + pgup
<Asako>	or scroll lock then page up
	<mwc>	Hmmmmm
	<reverser>	hmm still not working
<reverser>	im doing it wrong i think
	<reverser>	ill try again
	<Asako>	yeah
	<mwc>	I've set CPUTYPE?=pentium4 in my /etc/make.conf
<Asako>	in xterm you can even use the mouse wheel
<mwc>	but I'm not seeing any -mcpu options in the scrollby of build world
<nainef>	that has to be set in xorg.conf
	<nainef>	in reference to Asako
	<Asako>	yeah
	<reverser>	thank you
<Asako>	I figured xorg would do that by default now
	<nainef>	hehehe
<Asako>	I still have the same config file from a few years ago
<reverser>	etly as an observer and not a ruler
	<reverser>	<spaz> livefs?
<reverser>	<spaz> never heard of it
	<reverser>	<code64> mean either
<reverser>	<reverser> how can i copy all the text? because i can't scroll all the text
	<reverser>	<Belliash> ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/ISO-IMAGES/7.0/7.0-RC1-amd64-livefs.iso
