<f00bar80> why do VLC open this streaming URL http://24.148.122.144:7001/nphMotionHpeg?Resolution=320x240&Quality=Standard and a DirectShow filter can't <---- webcampxp ( IP Camera [JPEG/MJPEG] ) ? , i know that a DirectShow is meant more by file extensions, if this is the issue, how then VLC bypass it ? and if not may anyone thankfuly correct me ? or direct me to the right place in case i'm off-topic .
<Trax``> directshow is for accessing a capturecard/device not a http stream
<f00bar80> Trax``: cool , but the fact that this stream get played by VLC .
<Trax``> vlc using http:// as input works you mean?
<f00bar80> Trax``: yes
<Trax``> but you can't use vlc to get video from your capture device?
<f00bar80> Trax``: i'm mainly concernd with this URL, i want to know why it works in VLC and not the mentioned DirectShow filter /
<f00bar80> Trax``: or even want to know how it works in VLC ?
<Trax``> you can use the wizard to use a directshow device
<Trax``> and then transcode/stream
<f00bar80> Trax``: which wizard and what do you mean by directshow device
<Trax``> maybe one step back.. what do you want to do.. so far you say VLC opens a certain webstream.. but you want to know how directshow works
<Trax``> so what is your goal.. you plan to use directshow input on your capture device and use that as input for VLC and then transcode/stream to internet?

<f00bar80> Trax``: I want to use the webstream as an input to a directshow based application i.e. MSN messenger
<DGMurdockIII> zorglu_; im not sure but you mean for linux
<f00bar80> Trax``: did you get what i mean ?
 bobby_C (n=bobby@85.127.79.59) has joined channel #videolan
<DGMurdockIII> zorglu_; songbird use GStreamer on Linux, and VLC on Mac & Windows
<zorglu_> DGMurdockIII: ah ok. thank the info. do they have a channel ?
<f00bar80> Trax``: in another meaning i want to use this webstream as a virtual webcam to my MSN messenger
 Signoff: funman ("Lost terminal")
<Trax``> yeah but I didn't get the relation to VLC .. it's just the input http that happens to work with it?
stevel (n=stevel@74.85.7.238) has joined channel #videolan
<DGMurdockIII> zorglu_; yes it on the server irc.mozilla.org the there chane is challed songbird
<stevel> DGMurdockIII: i'm here
<zorglu_> DGMurdockIII: ok thanks
<stevel> is there a history file somewhere i can read to catch up on what you guys are discussing re: songbird?
<DGMurdockIII> (stevel): zorglu_ may want to talk to u
<f00bar80> Trax``: i'm asking about the way VLC uses to play this webStreaming , also if i can use VLC to transcode the stream to DirectShow device , if you mean by DirectShow ---> VFW based application
<zorglu_> DGMurdockIII: to me ?
<stevel> zorglu_: what's up?
<f00bar80> Trax``: _DireShow Device ---means---> VFW based application_*
<zorglu_> stevel: a bit confused at the moment, but beside that all good :) and you ?
<CGPCR> hello, I was wondering, when is next VLC release scheduled to be?
<DGMurdockIII> zorglu_; he works on songbird
<zorglu_> DGMurdockIII: ah ok :)
feepk (n=felix@pD9534582.dip.t-dialin.net) has joined channel #videolan
<xtophe> CGPCR: we don't do schedule
<stevel> zorglu_: hard at work on a fine boxing day afternoon ;-) DGMurdockIII said to pop in here.
<CGPCR> xtophe: k
<DGMurdockIII> i thnk songbird and video lan should work more closely togher
<zorglu_> stevel: well i was just curious about the project. i dont have any specific question. but i like collaboration :)
<zorglu_> stevel: hehe :)
<stevel> zorglu_: no worries, i'm happy to answer any questions that may come up. but yeah, we (Songbird) use VLC for media playback on Windows & Mac. DGMurdockIII seems to be agitating for us to update past the current 0.8.6c we currently are synched with
<stevel> ;-)
<zorglu_> stevel: out of curiosity, DGMurdockIII tells me songbird use vlc for win/mac but gstreamer on linux. why this specificity ?
<zorglu_> i shoot as i dont get any specific question :)
<f00bar80> Trax``: any comment ?
<stevel> zorglu_: i think long term we'd like to standardize on one media core - but we actually support quite a few (we're modular like that). licensing wise, GStreamer is friendlier (LGPL as opposed to GPL)
 CGPCR has left channel #videolan
<Trax``> f00bar80: I don't think you can use VLC to create a vfw
<zorglu_> stevel: ok. i heard you did quite a lot of work on gstreamer macosx.
<stevel> we support GStreamer, VLC, Quicktime, and WMP as the various media cores. the open source builds use VLC on Mac/Windows, but proprietary builds (e.g. our partners' builds) can't use VLC due to the GPL licensing, so we substitute Quicktime or WMP (depending on the OS) media cores instead
<Trax``> vfw has also been deprecated and replaced by wdm drivers nowadays
<f00bar80> Trax``: which mean i can't use it to transcode the stream ?
<stevel> zorglu_: yeah, we've funded quite a bit of GStreamer work (Fluendo's WMP support for one)
<zorglu_> stevel: nice
<f00bar80> Trax``: always VLC can't transcode to wdm ?
<Trax``> you can use VLC to use input stream and restream or even retranscode but I don't see how you would use it inside applications like MSN
<Trax``> you could create a Windows Media Player compatible stream though, so people can connect to http://your_ip:8080/stream.asf
<DGMurdockIII> why not help get some of the stuff u need in video lan to make it work
<stevel> zorglu_: and yeah, we funded the Fluendo guys to get GStreamer working on Windows & Mac
<stevel> DGMurdockIII: because VLC can't be the end-all to solve all our media core needs, because of the licensing
<f00bar80> Trax``: isn't MSN based on DirectShow Filters ? and i also see a lot of Virtual WEbCams , then how these cams are working
<stevel> don't get me wrong, we all think VLC rocks - we just need to be able to provide alternatives to our partners who can't bundle VLC
<zorglu_> stevel: dont worry this is cool. just wanted to know
<DGMurdockIII> why cant they bondel it
<DGMurdockIII> bundel
<Trax``> some of the mozilla/activex stuff was funded by our company as well in order to make it more usuable for the masses
<stevel> DGMurdockIII: licensing. go google LGPL vs. GPL :)
<Trax``> more companies should get involved with open source..
<stevel> Trax``: definitely
<zorglu_> yep most soft they write are not part of their 'competitive edge' and so they should collaborate to reduce cost
<zorglu_> ok i read too much economy book recently
<zorglu_> too many books <- or e-bola will correct me :)
<stevel> yup. building Songbird is our core competency, building the best media decoding algorithms in the world is not. we'd much rather fund someone else to do the work and have it benefit the larger open source community
<f00bar80> Trax``: isn't MSN based on DirectShow Filters ? and i also see a lot of Virtual WEbCams , then how these cams are working
drifterz (n=craig@216.36.173.70) has joined channel #videolan
<Trax``> what you want is http stream -> VLC -> convert into directshow -> use in MSN
<f00bar80> Trax``: so no way even to know how VLC play this webstream ?
<Trax``> but VLC doesn't act as a transparant proxy thing to emulate a directshow device.. it can access a directshow device
<f00bar80> Trax``: any guide/pointer to VLC transcoding to Directshow ?
<zorglu_> stevel: naive question, how do you make your money ?
<zorglu_> stevel: btw you stop me when i start bothering :)
<Trax``> VLC cannot transcode to directshow.. see directshow as a low level driver for a capture device
<f00bar80> Trax``: and what i need is something to emulate directshow device ?
<Trax``> apparently if your application only accepts directshow as input such as MSN
<stevel> zorglu_: heh. a couple of ways: 1) referral partnerships for search engines/link space, etc. 2) licensing Songbird to other companies.
<stevel> zorglu_: but those are all long term business models. right now we're just focused on making the core product better. so our only current revenue stream is selling t-shirts with our farting bird mascot on 'em
<stevel> ;-)

<stevel> http://www.songbirdnest.com/merchtable ;-)
<zorglu_> stevel: hehehe :)
<Trax``> f00bar80: I don't know of any application that does that

<zorglu_> stevel: ok i dont have any more question. you seem quite open i like it :)
<f00bar80> Trax``: ...?
<Trax``> I don't know how virtual webcams work.. I do know a bit more about VLC
<f00bar80> Trax``: Only want to know what's the difference between something that emulate a directshow device and accessing a directshow device(VLC) , also what do you mean by ---> (_see directshow as a low level driver for a capture device_) ?
<Trax``> that what gives acces to a directshow device is a driver
<f00bar80> Trax``: i.e. ...?
<Trax``> VLC then uses that driver to grab raw input and can transcode/convert that
<Trax``> what you want is the other way around and VLC can't do that
<Trax``> VLC can't output to a directshow device
eugo (n=eugo@unaffiliated/eugo) has joined channel #videolan
<Trax``> because that is typically an input device
<feepk> stevel: does songbird use any MRL options of VLC's browser plugins?
<f00bar80> Trax``: what's meant exactly by a driver ?
<f00bar80> Trax``: also i'm still asking how VLC was able to play this webstream regarding this "Driver"
<Trax``> your first sample was just a webstream
<stevel> zorglu_: thanks (sorry for the delay - our toaster oven in the kitchen caught fire, we had to go put it out)
<zorglu_> :)
<Trax``> and VLC can play those just fine
<f00bar80> Trax``: HOW ?
Trax`` is tempted to say "pure magic"
<stevel> feepk: afaik, we don't use any of VLC's browser plugins
<f00bar80> Trax``: :) really i'm not joking :)
<Trax``> wouldn't know where to begin.. same as asking how (technically) windows media player is able to play a http:// stream
<f00bar80> Trax``: WMP is meant by file extension why not VLC ?
<Trax``> explain?
<Trax``> what do you mean by meant
<f00bar80> Trax``: WMP can't play http streams without file extension end
<Trax``> it can
<Trax``> for livestreams I never specify extentions
<f00bar80> Trax``: i tried to use WMP to play the mentioned URL , after installing/registering a filter for this streaming Cam , got the error "The media type of this file isn't recognized" after a time trying to get connected to this url
<Trax``> windows media only understands windows media
<Trax``> so if you use other types of codecs or hardware which produces incompatible streams for windows media player this can happen
Remiii (n=Remiii@ABordeaux-256-1-45-90.w90-11.abo.wanadoo.fr) has joined channel #videolan
<f00bar80> Trax``: even after registering a filter for this hardware ?
 drifterz has left channel #VideoLAN
<Trax``> I wouldn't expect windows media player to be able to use an input device at all
<Trax``> it is meant for playing files not directly play from a capture device
<f00bar80> Trax``: so how VLC can do it
<f00bar80> Trax``: what's the difference that lets vlc play it and not wmp
<Trax``> VLC is so much more than just a player
<Trax``> it can use capture devices, convert/transcode/restream etc.
<f00bar80> Trax``: and to play webstream VLC use it as a capture device, or it convert/transcode this streaming to be displayed ?
<Trax``> transcode and restream is optional
<Trax``> I do that for a dshow device.. capture raw input, convert into H.264/AAC or WMV/WMA and stream through http
<f00bar80> Trax``: i'm talking specially regarding the URL i posted previously
<Trax``> that is just a basic http:// stream and what is done under the hood we don't know
<Trax``> VLC just reads it and decodes the video and audio just like WMP would and then displays it
<f00bar80> Trax``: so what do you suggest for me to do ?
Signoff: capgadget ("Rhodium detected! Where is my toad?")
<Trax``> never give up hope
<Trax``> and ask google :)
<Trax``> I have no idea how to do what you want.. perhaps there are tools out there that will make MSN use it as input
