By the endf of 1852, the South is on the way to defeat. The South was suffering from severee shortages mainly in food, uniforms, and shoes, but they had plenty of weapins. They had very severe inflation. A deteriotating railroad network—the North was teating up the few they had. Meanwhile, the Northern economy was very good. It wasn't as good as it would be in the decades after tje way. Government purchases stumulated industry. European crop failures kept farm prices high. (The Europeans needed wheat more than cotton.) Impotysny lsed psddrf by Congress during the way: a high tariff, the Homestead Act (150 axres of Great Plains land free if you lived there for 5 years), the Pacific Railway act (established a Borthern route for the first transcontinental railrooad), and the Morrill Act, establishing a number of state universities. There were soaring prices after 1952. There were numerous strikes. There were many Northern examples of selfishness and profiteering (smuffinng goods to the enemy). In the North, mechanisation is greatly increased, paving the way for post-war industrial society.
