16:31 < max_> good morning
16:32 < max_> curious - does anyone use KDE or GNOME
16:32 < max_> yeah same
16:32 < max_> i tried using GNOME but it seemed flaky in terms of stability
16:32 < max_> so I installed KDE, seems far more stable
16:33 < max_> what version are you using
16:33 < max_> 2007 or 2008
16:34 < hucker> max_: Gnome is dead stable.
16:35 < max_> yes, preference
16:35 < max_> maybe i'll go back to using GNOME but not now
16:35 < max_> i'll stick with KDE for the time being
16:37 < max_> yea i was just checking kde.org out
16:38 < max_> looks interesting
16:38 < max_> i've been playing with Linux for a long time now
16:39 < max_> never could find a distro that'd work for me
16:39 < max_> until Ubuntu, then now Mandriva
16:39 < max_> Xandros came close
16:39 < max_> now i finally have legit DVD playback
16:39 < max_> and easier installation processes (i.e. internet)
16:40 < max_> but why can't linux simply install programs like an .exe file?
16:40 < max_> like how an .exe file does
16:40 < max_> sorry - i corrected myself
16:40 < max_> i know .exe is for windows
16:40 < max_> but conceptually, why isn't installation of a program as easy as it is in Windows
16:41 < max_> urpmi?
16:42 < max_> i remember i successfully installed nvidia drivers in the terminal and the nvidia logo came up afterwards at boot, but still wouldn't work right - it's stuff like that that usedta hold me back from fully embracing Linux
16:43 < max_> (this was when I had another version of Linux a couple years ago)
16:43 < hucker> max_: Then use windows.
16:44 < max_> funny
16:44 < max_> actually i've been thinking about getting MacOS later
16:44 < max_> not now
16:44 < hucker> max_: usually, the things you describe work just fine.
16:45 < max_> sure
16:45 < max_> yea
16:45 < max_> but easier to manage in them
16:45 < max_> really
16:45 < max_> okeydoke
16:46 < max_> again with the personal preferences ;-)
16:46 < max_> well i'll say this - linux has got to be more appealing than before with the addition of internet-based software package managers
16:48 < max_> i know, i agree - i grew up using the old DOS command shell, but then i migrated over to Windows .. then continued growing up totally windows-oriented
16:48 < max_> so i never really got around to learning the commands and such
16:49 < max_> by the time i figured it couldn't hurt to try Linux, i was struck by the complexity of what one had to do just to install a program - in windows, it was double-click on a mouse, and for linux, it was having to know this and that for the command line parameter
16:49 < max_> but try i did
16:50 < max_> is that the same thing as Install and Remove Software?
16:50 < max_> (in Mandriva)
16:50 < max_> no way will i ever try out Slackware
16:50 < max_> i'd die with Slackware
16:50 < max_> yeah then i've already tried it out (sorta)
16:50 < max_> but will bookmark the link you gave me earlier
16:51 < max_> ha
16:51 < max_> yea i tried redhat before, not bad
16:53 < max_> i'll agree with that
16:53 < max_> how long have you been users of Mandriva (or Mandrake)
16:54 < max_> hehe
16:54 < max_> i had a AMD K6-2
16:54 < max_> i think mine was 450 MHz
16:54 < max_> mandrake ... hmmm
16:55 < max_> trying to remmy when my first one was
16:55 < max_> it was def a long time ago
16:55 < max_> i liked it - that i remember about it
16:56 < max_> ah thanks! lemme look
16:57 < max_> shit, there's a LOT of Linux releases
16:57 < max_> hey whaddya think of Linspire
16:57 < max_> i did have Linspire 5
16:57 < max_> meh
16:58 < max_> but haven't tried 6
16:58 < max_> but 6 doesn't look impressive
16:58 < max_> yeah?
16:58 < max_> howcum
16:59 < max_> ditto
16:59 < max_> i have a C2D
16:59 < max_> (Core 2 Duo)
16:59 < max_> you?
16:59 < max_> what's your CPU
