PRESIDENT HERBERT HOOVER

President Herbert Hoover should not be on Mount Rushmore because of his basic failure as president. Herbert Hoover was elected president of the United States in 1928. One year later the stock market crashed and Herbert Hoover received the blame. In domestic policy, he did not believe in giving federal aid when the stock market crashed. This ultimately destroyed his public approval. His regulations on radio broadcasting and aviation were not seen over the negativity towards the Stock Market crash. It was so bad in fact, that people began to call towns filled with unemployed people, homeless people living in tents, and hundreds of shacks Hoovervilles. Another example of his domestic failure was the "Hawley-Smoot Tariff bill that Hoover signed, retarded growth and recovery by raising tariffs (especially on agricultural products) and stifling international trade. His Agricultural Marketing Act had little impact on the prospects of American farmers" (Miller Center). Herbert Hoover had little or no persuasion with the public because of his refusal to grant federal aid to the people and because of his blame for the Stock Market crash. Hoover's foreign policy was a "resultant" of the Great Depression. His mentality was around the fact that the stock market crash resulted from international economical problems; therefore, he was bent on helping foreign economic affairs such as regulations on international trade. He also pushed for disarmament treaties, did something about Japanese violence in China, and helped U.S. relations with Central and Southern America. Hoover had some influence after his presidency by appointing Charles Evan Hughes to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, appointing a Justice Owen Roberts, and appointing a Benjamin Cardozo to the Supreme Court.
