Subject: Thursday's Internet & intercampus network problems
Early Thursday morning around midnight, fibre optic cable belonging to Allstream (Kwantlen's internet & intercampus network link provider) was vandalized. The resulting fibre break led to yesterday's major disruption of internet and intercampus services at Kwantlen. The same fibre break resulted in outages at several provincial government offices in the Surrey area as well as problems with Ticket Vending Machines at Skytrain stations throughout the Lower Mainland. Due to the complex nature of the repair work this was a lengthy outage and Kwantlen only received "time to repair" estimates in the afternoon. Most services were up and running again at 4:30pm, while the Langley campus link was restored at 6:30pm.
While outages caused by vandalism often cannot be avoided, IET will be discussing the incident with Kwantlen's providers to see what steps can be taken to minimize disruptions of this type in the future and keep Kwantlen better informed of how long repairs are expected to take if an incident does occur.
