For former users of OiNK.cd
Q: What happend?
A: Most of you have read it already, otherwise you wouldnt be here. But anyways: On Tuesday (October 23rd) morning around 7:20 AM, UK police arrested OiNK at his house. They have also raided his parents house and work place. Police has seized all computer equipment, and arrested him. About two hours later, dutch Police seized the OiNK.cd servers hosted in the Netherlands. OiNK has been released on bail a few hours later. He is doing fine so far. He has not been charged with anything official yet.
Q: Do i have to worry about my password?
A: Passwords have never been stored in plaintext anywhere. Only as salted MD5 hashes. Also, police or industry agencies do not care about your password. If it lets you sleep any better, change it on all other trackers and such.
Q: Do i as a normal user need to be scared?
A: No. At this time it is not to be expected for either government or IFPI and such to go after all users.
Q: What is gonna happen now?
A: OiNK himself will have several appointments at court. That is going to take a while.
Police is going to go through all seized material and collected evidence. That is going to take a while too. Based on that they will probably decide which users they want to go for. But even if they do, we do expect it only to happen to the largest of all uploaders, in a worst case. You normal user with lets say 2.0 ratio and 100GB upload, do not need to worry as we can tell. The main goal of the industry has been achieved, closing down the site. Going after 180.000 users all around the planet would be a lot more work than the investigation they already did.
Q: The future of the OiNK community?
A: Unknown. As of now, the former staff does not intend to start a new tracker. All backups of the old site have been seized by the police.
Q: Will there be a fundraiser for legalcosts?
A: Right now OiNK has not been charged. Within the next few weeks, we will be able to tell if such a fund is needed at all. Until then we urge everyone to not fall for any fundraisers, no matter how legit they claim to be. Unless you read about it on this blog, it is a scam. All the donation offers are appreciated, but for now, hold on and wait.
