Upon receipt, the destination reads through the start bit (0111111). It identifies that there are six consecutive 1’s and checks the next bit. If the following bit is a 1, then the frame is erroneous (as a 0 should have been inserted after the fifth 1), however, if the receiver would find a 0 following the six 1’s, then this would denote the beginning of the data set. Once the receiver knows the data set has begun, it will continue to read through the data set and destuffs (remove) any 0’s which are preceded by five 1’s before sending the frame to the network layer.
After reading the data the receiver will encounter another set of six consecutive 1’s followed by a 0 which indicate the end of the frame.
