I installed this Slack package: http://www.linuxpackages.net/pkg_details.php?id=9835
And followed the Xorg configuration part of this guide which worked for me a little while back in Arch: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Touchpad_Synaptics
But after restarting the XServer, I'm not getting any results. Any common pitfalls here? Have any laptop users successfully installed and configured Synaptics for scrolling, etc?

I installed synaptic as I described there : http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php/Asus_F3Jc-AP045c#TouchPad
And everything works fine.... of course the options are for an ASUS F3Jc-AP045c

Thanks for the tip! It works great now.
I've created an article in the Wiki corresponding to this solution. The xorg.conf settings I suggest are more generic (using /dev/mouse1 instead of /dev/psaux, for example), but feel free to add on to the article.

I've got a similar problem and solved it quite easily. Here's the thread: http://support.zenwalk.org/index.php/topic,9777.0.html
