[21:57] <[b]adman> For today's chat, we've got several members of id Software and Splash Damage here.. let me introduce everyone
[21:58] <[b]adman> kevinc is id Software's Executive Producer on the game. We've also got Maleficus, who worked on the bots for the game over at id. Then there's SyncError, id Software's Community Manager.
[21:58] <[b]adman> From Splash Damage, we have Locki, owner of Splash Damage and Lead Game Designer on ETQW.
[21:59] <[b]adman> Relaxer's the Managing Director here at Splash Damage and doubles as our Producer on ETQW
[22:00] <[b]adman> Wils is the Lead Level Designer on the game, and daveducks is a freshly hired Level Designer here (you may know him from Counter-Strike - he designed a little map called de_dust)
[22:01] <[b]adman> jRAD is a programmer here at Splash. Malarky is our Business Development Manager. RR2 is the Technical Director.
[22:01] <[b]adman> We've also got Can8dnBen from Activision who's our on-site producer and regularly dines at McDonald's
[22:01] <[b]adman> ...and apparently id can't wait to get going :o
[22:01] <[b]adman> Lastly, I'm Splash Damage's community relations manager.
[22:02] <[b]adman> Oh yeah, I forgot MoP. He loiters.
[22:02] <[b]adman> And sometimes does art.
[22:02] <[b]adman> So without further ado, let's get underway.

[21:59] <etqw> WindowsLive asked: Hello, i saw the etqw demo on steam... will etqw be fully released on steam?
[21:59] <etqw> kevinc answers: Yes. ETQW is available on Steam.

[22:01] <etqw> Tommy[D] asked: Any new info about a Linux Demo and a release date for the linux client?
[22:01] <etqw> malarky answers: ttimo at id is working on this, there should be news in a couple of weeks

[22:02] <etqw> [DumB]SGR asked: I was interested in how many people worked on QW:ET, and how long did it take from to get from the concept to the finished product (design, implementation, etc.)
[22:02] <etqw> Locki answers: We started out at Splash Damage with about six people on the project in 2003, and just a few guys at id Software - we were in a research and development phase for around a year, and then game was in full production for about three years after that. There are now five teams working on ETQW - Splash Damage on the PC, Nerve Software on the 360, Z-Axis on the PS3, id Software overseeing everything, and then Activision's big team for QA

[22:03] <etqw> Darion asked: Will it be playable for the mac?
[22:03] <etqw> Wils answers: Yes, Aspyr are currently working on the Mac version

[22:03] <etqw> oyo^Sukros asked: will it be vista x64 ready?
[22:03] <etqw> RR2|work answers: I play ETQW on Vista 64 at home, works fine!

[22:03] <etqw> giZm asked: On Volcano, why can't the Strogg land directly inside the GDF base? It's wide open and all! It doesn't make sense!
[22:03] <etqw> malarky answers: they missed :)

[22:03] <etqw> Thing asked: Hey there guys, how do you feel now? The game is released, all your hard work is finished and everyone pretty much love your game. Your satisfied?
[22:03] <etqw> Locki answers: It's an amazing feeling. I know that id Software have had this experience of shipping multiple massive hits, but for Splash Damage this is our first full retail game - we're really happy.

[22:04] <etqw> deadpool- asked: can you make Dust 3
[22:04] <etqw> daveducks answers: One day m'lad, one day...

[22:05] <etqw> Psycho_Al asked: Are there definite plans to add VOIP to the game?
[22:05] <etqw> jRAD answers: VOIP will be added in an upcoming patch.

[22:05] <etqw> Das_Wiesel asked: will it be possible to play QW with an mid-end mashine under low-grafic's settings?
[22:05] <etqw> kevinc answers: You should go to our community page and look over the system specifications listed there. Our performance on even our minimum system is pretty good. So, if you fall inside those specs you should be fine.

[22:06] <etqw> HateE asked: will VoIP be included in an upcoming patch?
[22:06] <etqw> Locki answers: Yes.

[22:06] <etqw> Wayf asked: Are you still working on the Assault Rifle versus Lacerator balancing? Currently a good player with the Assault Rifle will beat a good player that uses the Lacerator about 8 times out of 10.
[22:06] <etqw> Wils answers: We're tracking any and all balance issues that crop up like this, yes. If you have any feedback please do post in the feedback forum (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=29)

[22:06] <etqw> [FUBR]MadPiloT asked: will there be an update to fix botlag / the bots stopping, shaking, and moving on after about 5sec?
[22:06] <etqw> Maleficus answers: Yes! i'm working on tweaking the bots right now. This includes bug fixes and feedback from the community.

[22:06] <etqw> blaznee asked: Will there be an official strategy guide out?
[22:06] <etqw> [b]adman answers: Brady Games have put together a really cool strategy guide for the game. It contains really extensive stats on all the weapons and deployables, elaborate map strategies, and tons of general tips and tricks. I highly recommend picking it up. We're going to have a special feature on the guide on the community site in a few days, so look for that.

[22:06] <etqw> KeijoX asked: what is your favourite pizza?
[22:06] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: Malarky loves a good hot sausage sensation

[22:07] <etqw> xnow_laptop asked: I was just wondering hwo jrad got into his programming career.
[22:07] <etqw> jRAD answers: Short version: after finishing a 4 year degree in Computer Science, I went to work as a level designer at Ritual for a couple of years. Then I moved over to London to take on Splash Damage's tools programming and User Interface work.

[22:07] <etqw> MrKnife asked: are you gonna add joystick support soon?
[22:07] <etqw> RR2|work answers: You can setup joystick controls via the console. They are quite powerful actually! We don't have any full supports in the menus or anything though as there are just too many devices with their own configuration quirks.

[22:08] <etqw> GLTrancer asked: are there mod tools available for end users to make custom maps and mods?
[22:08] <etqw> Locki answers: There will be a complete suite of mod-making tools released, including the source code for the game, level design and other tools, media, and documentation. We're polishing stuff right now, but no date as yet.

[22:08] <etqw> EFM|Starscream asked: Any insight if ETQW will be developed for any consoles? An example, the Xbox 360? Implementing the online between xbox and computer seen in shadowrun?
[22:08] <etqw> RR2|work answers: ETQW is being developed for the Xbox 360 by Nerve Software, and for the PS3 by Activision Foster City. These versions all stand on their own, currently there is no cross-platform play planned.

[22:09] <etqw> Tomtenizze_ asked: Is there some kind of tutorial, either in-game or online that newbies like me can read/watch/listen to, to learn more about how to the different classes works etc.?
[22:09] <etqw> MoP answers: If you look in the Start Menu where you installed ETQW, and look in the Documentation section for the Advanced User Guide, it should cover most of the basics about the game. There's more good stuff online at ETQW For Newbies, too - http://4newbies.planetwolfenstein.gamespy.com/ETQW/

[22:09] <etqw> calimer asked: I just want to say hi to everyone through my work on the Doom 3 Mod Last Man Standing and my lead coder now works at Splash Damage
[22:09] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: Ao rocks

[22:10] <etqw> DB42 asked: does ETQW support DirectX 10 ?
[22:10] <etqw> RR2|work answers: ETQW runs fine on Vista with DX10 installed. We don't utilise any of its new features though. (Being an OpenGL game, the situation is slightly different anyway.)

[22:10] <etqw> cK^Monkey asked: Thanks for the best thing since BF1942, sliced bread and strapless bra's. Any chance we can see some joystick support in control settings ?
[22:10] <etqw> Locki answers: Thanks for the compliments! It's not officially supported right now, but you can get your joystick working - search our forums for analogue controller support (therer are various bindings you can use - we've had multi-joystick setup for the Anansi, with cycli, collective, and even raving pedals for rotor control - so it's pretty powerful).

[22:10] <etqw> Zeldor asked: Why Collector's Edition was quite poor in contents and we even didn't get all cards? [Husky, Trojan]
[22:10] <etqw> kevinc answers: If you were missing some cards that should have been in the deck please contact the technical support line. You should have a complete set.

[22:10] <etqw> {KHI}DellGuy asked: who has the best computer at the office, what are the specs? :D
[22:10] <etqw> malarky answers: I think that's probably mike, our graphics programmer. He has some kind of pre-release quad intel with an 8800 gtx.

[22:11] <etqw> SE|Squeaky asked: Wich Multiplayer maps are your favorites?
[22:11] <etqw> MoP answers: Everyone here has different favourite maps, but personally I like Refinery best. It looks great and the gameplay flows very nicely.

[22:12] <etqw> bioXar|Mephisto asked: What will you do with supporting LANs with Quake Wars?
[22:12] <etqw> Locki answers: We're already working with lots of LAN parties and tournaments, and will continue to do so - there's an event calendar on the community site (http://community.enemyterritory.com) and we report regularly on the news there about them.

[22:13] <etqw> Brandmon asked: @ wils, What is the most Map you have enjoyed making for ET:QW?
[22:13] <etqw> Wils answers: I enjoyed making Island the most, because I got to rough out the basic design and then hand it over to Nerve to make it cool. They did a great job on it, so it's like the map I wanted to make but still feels fresh to play.

[22:13] <etqw> Gwan asked: Whats your all-time favorite game?
[22:13] <etqw> Locki answers: Enemy Territory Quake Wars!

[22:13] <etqw> knijn asked: Do you get paid for answering question?
[22:13] <etqw> jRAD answers: Oh, I wish!

[22:13] <etqw> Mordenkainen asked: Will you consider releasing those Base interiours that were removed for gameplay reasons? Us modders could make use of them! Thanks for a great game
[22:13] <etqw> malarky answers: there's a strong possibility we can put this in the sdk

[22:14] <etqw> Legioonalainen asked: Could you tell about the game generally? Is it different from the general FPS games? Why should people spend their money on buying it?
[22:14] <etqw> kevinc answers: ETQW really stands apart from other games because of the way players can work as part of a team to accomplish common missions. However, I think your best bet is to read over some of the reviews and download and play the demo.

[22:14] <etqw> Hndmn asked: is Logitech G15 supported
[22:14] <etqw> malarky answers: we hacve g15 support out of the box

[22:14] <etqw> snper` asked: Why are you aswering these questions a bunch of no-life nerds make, if you dont even get paid???
[22:14] <etqw> RR2|work answers: In beer and pizza! (But I have to drive, so no beer for me...)

[22:14] <etqw> [GFY]Rahabib asked: what are the restrictions for ranked servers (custom maps etc.)?
[22:14] <etqw> Locki answers: The system in ETQW rewards campaign-length play with unlockable rewards, and persistent team prowess with status-reflecting achievements and military rankings - see http://stats.enemyterritory.com for the persistent site.

[22:14] <etqw> BiG_Jnz asked: Is it allowed to play Halo 3 @ the SD office? (I heard Valve banned Bishock from their office)
[22:14] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: When we went Gold, I went to the local games emporium and bought all the games that I wouldn't let people play while we were finishing the game. Much Bioshock and Halo have been played, as well as a fair bit of Virtua Fighter 5 strangely enough (venting)

[22:15] <etqw> Reali asked: What was the hardest phase of doing the game? Modelling, coding ?
[22:15] <etqw> RR2|work answers: Finishing and shipping it.

[22:15] <etqw> CSPro|Kingp asked: does chuck norris play quakewars ?
[22:15] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: Chuck Norris lives Quake Wars

[22:15] <etqw> KaiN_ asked: What music do u listen in the office mostly? :
[22:15] <etqw> daveducks answers: whatever pops up on my ipod - this week it was mostly party ben, the new go team! album and old armando iannucci radio shows!

[22:15] <etqw> quadV|Iain asked: Will any of SD be at i32?
[22:15] <etqw> malarky answers: yup, Multiplay are running an ETQW tourney and the grand final will be on stage in their awesome arena thing. We'll be there to see that, and may be attending as punters

[22:16] <etqw> schachmat asked: What is the average age of the developers of etqw?
[22:16] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: The average age at Splash Damage is around 27 I think (Bongoboy and Lloydm bring the average down a bit)

[22:16] <etqw> [DumB]SGR asked: Online games often seem to suffer from cheaters these days, other than well-admined servers, are there any decent anti-cheating technologies in QW:ET which might help keep servers clear of this menace?
[22:16] <etqw> Locki answers: We have systems that deal with griefing, anti-social play in general, spawn camping, and the use of hacks. If you play on a Punkbuster-enabled server, you should have a good time.

[22:17] <etqw> MonsOlympus asked: why was the nailgun changed from a machine gun like weapon to more of a shotgun like weapon? considering quake 2 had a double barrel
[22:17] <etqw> SyncError answers: I find the ETQW version of the Nailgun to be a nice nod to the Quake 3 Team Arena nailgun, which too was a single fire spread shot weapon.

[22:17] <etqw> Ajial asked: What sort of support will there be in the modding tools in the way of adding completely new content? (Weapons and the like)
[22:17] <etqw> jRAD answers: You can add new weapons, gametypes, vehicles, or just about anything else!

[22:18] <etqw> Gvcc asked: wtf is this
[22:18] <etqw> Wils answers: wtf its a q&a bot

[22:18] <etqw> OWN|Claes asked: will et:qw work on my windows 95 pc?
[22:18] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: We require WindowsXP or Vista, the requirements are available from the official site

[22:18] <etqw> [DFQN]X-Ray007 asked: What studies did MoP do to be a graphics artist at SD?
[22:18] <etqw> MoP answers: I have a Bachelors degree in Computer Arts, but a degree by itself won't get you far in the videogames industry - in fact some of the best programmers and artists never went to university. You really need a passion for working on games, and a lot of free time to practise your art :)

[22:18] <etqw> wand^afk asked: With the Q4 multiplayer not proving as popular as in previous incarnations, were there any concerns that Quake had simply had it's day? bearing in mind that Battlefield kind of rools the skool when it comes to squad based fps
[22:18] <etqw> Locki answers: Wolfenstein Enemy Territory has a higher player count.

[22:19] <etqw> meg|work asked: Horrible question time: Which game do the Splashdamage staff prefer ET RtCW or ET QW?
[22:19] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: We prefer ETQW in the office at the moment. The last time we collectively played WolfET we were so out of practice. Malarky was trying to bring an SSM in, and I spent 20 minutes looking for a Badger

[22:20] <etqw> Keats asked: Did you put any Easter Eggs in the game?
[22:20] <etqw> MoP answers: Heh, yeah, there are a few of them. Check out the graffiti in Outskirts for a whole bunch of company in-jokes. Then there's stuff like the text on the Field Ops' visor, and the writing on the side of the MCP vehicle and SSM missiles...

[22:20] <etqw> XoZeN|XzN asked: Hi there guys, how are you all doing today ? well, I want to ask if you've in you're mind, to cross-play et:qw in all platforms, or if it will be possible to do it in the future and what has to be made to that to be possible one day ? The idea is in the air in a lot of game concepts nowadays, but, we're seeing that everyone is kinda leaving it behind...what do you have to say about this ?
[22:20] <etqw> kevinc answers: I think the potential of cross platform play is very cool. As game developers we like when these type of opportunities are created for us. Because it opens up the potential for new types of games. But I think it is difficult to take an existing competetive game and make it work well. There are issues of aim assist and movement speed differences and player and vehicle controls differences between the platforms that would make c

[22:20] <etqw> KillHour asked: Quake has a history of releasing source code, and this is no exception, what are some of your favorite open source games?
[22:20] <etqw> daveducks answers: I'm liking Frets on Fire quite a bit. Was also playing the original Doom on t'internet a few weeks ago (thanks to the various ports), which was ridiculously good fun (and so fast!)

[22:20] <etqw> pretender asked: How hard it was to design AI for the game?
[22:20] <etqw> Maleficus answers: It was challenging, and a lot of fun. ETQW is a very involving game, with a lot of possible ways of completing the objectives. My job has been to work extra hard to create an AI that can handle all of the possibilities and be fun and engaging. When you play the bots, you'll feel like they're a part of the team, working alongside you to complete the objectives.

[22:22] <etqw> Gaia| asked: How long has Splash Damage been around for?
[22:22] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: We've been around for 6 years

[22:22] <etqw> A76|ji|PUI asked: Will there be a global ranking like in BF2 anytime?
[22:22] <etqw> malarky answers: if you play on ranked servers, your stats will be listed on http://stats.enemyterritory.com - it tracks quite a lot of detail about how yur playing, and there's global leaderboards etc

[22:23] <etqw> Jos asked: Is it me, or are the demo downloads very slow?
[22:23] <etqw> daveducks answers: The demo is on loads of different sites now, so if the one you're using is a bit slow for you, try somewhere else. FilePlanet has lots of mirrors; there's bound to be one really near you.

[22:23] <etqw> oyo^Sukros asked: will there be "trickjump only" maps?
[22:23] <etqw> Wils answers: not from us, but I would expect the community to make a load when the SDK comes out.

[22:24] <etqw> elton- asked: Are you planing on reworking some maps? There seems to be some minor balance issues (Slipgate...), and iteriors are often really really huge, it's really easy to get lost.
[22:24] <etqw> kevinc answers: We will continue to stay on top of the maps to make balance changes as needed. However, one thing we're keeping in mind is that at the moment people are just learning the maps and to best use them. It will take a little more time for people to begin to take advantage of all the classes and the tools. I play everyday and see it improving. It is very simimlar to what we saw on Wolf MP and Wolf ET.

[22:25] <etqw> eXaByte asked: is it worth downloading the demo?
[22:25] <etqw> Wils answers: sure! unless your isp charges you $30/gb or something, which seems unlikely

[22:25] <RR2|work> That was the wrong question number
[22:25] <etqw> Loffy asked: The GDF's Mobile Command-centre, it's diesel powered, eh?

[22:25] <etqw> Maleficus answers: no, its a new kind of bio-fuel. Can't discuss the details until the patents filed, its all very hush hush.
[22:25] <etqw> pretender asked: Do you re-use any code from other releases or are the codes always unique?

[22:25] <etqw> RR2|work answers: Obviously we started with the base of id Tech 4, namely Doom 3. There is some basic code re-use from Wolf ET as well. All saves time in the end.
[22:25] <RR2|work> That makes more sense

[22:25] <etqw> Mr2 asked: does ET QW work with a pixel shader 2.0 card?
[22:25] <etqw> RR2|work answers: Yep

[22:26] <etqw> Kejec asked: AC/DC or Slayer?
[22:26] <etqw> malarky answers: AC/DC

[22:26] <etqw> ionVision asked: Are there weapons/items that need to be unlocked in the game?
[22:26] <etqw> Locki answers: As you play through a campaign (3 maps) there are a large number of unlockables (52) that you can pursue as a reward for XP that help specialise your combat role.

[22:26] <etqw> JataFett asked: I like how you can earn and use unlocks durring gameplay. Why did you decide to do that way instead of the more traditional games of that style?
[22:26] <etqw> [b]adman answers: We felt that having unlocks and rewards limited to one campaign was the best solution in terms of making the game fair to everyone. The problem with permanent unlocks is that a few weeks after release, everybody has the best weapons and all the rewards - somebody who's just then buying the game isn't going to have a very fun time playing that environment.

[22:26] <etqw> Ilmuri asked: is there a (official) torrent for the demo?
[22:26] <etqw> SyncError answers: http://zerowing.idsoftware.com:6969

[22:26] <etqw> dforce|Diablo asked: Currently all maps are balanced around public play, when can we expect competitive Stop Watch scripts so the maps are balanced towards 6 vs 6 competitive play?
[22:26] <etqw> Wils answers: We're working on support for tournament play right now. I'm currently talking to a few of the clans in Europe and hope to get the US clans involved too in the near future

[22:27] <etqw> addshore asked: why havnt any of my questions been replyed to? :(
[22:27] <etqw> Maleficus answers: One just did!

[22:27] <etqw> FunkaZ asked: so now that you guys have finished making etwq, what will the next game be from splash damage?
[22:27] <etqw> Locki answers: There's a lot we want to do with ETQW before the whole company will work on something new. We have a ton of things on our wishlist for ongoing support.

[22:27] <etqw> Philthy asked: Pantera or Metallica?
[22:27] <etqw> MoP answers: Both! \m/

[22:28] <etqw> oly|azrael asked: How do you manage all the assets (textures, high res models, low res models, scripts, code, sounds etc.) of the game? are you using something like alienbrain or subversion/cvs?
[22:28] <etqw> malarky answers: we use subversion

[22:29] <etqw> mud1tza asked: I'm studying Games Design for my degree. I have looked at the requirements for jobs in the industry including the ones for splash damage and everyone seems to require so many years of experience. What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into the industry who has no experience yet?
[22:29] <etqw> daveducks answers: The best advice for any budding game developer is to mod your favourite game! These help give you experience and look VERY good on your CV or resume... and it's really good fun :)

[22:29] <etqw> cheesecake asked: what rig do you have at home?
[22:29] <etqw> Locki answers: Intel 3.46ghz dual-core extreme, 2bg ram, 8800GTX.

[22:29] <etqw> inf-Energy asked: So i have tried the demo of Quakewars, why is it just a look alike Battlefield game? why didnt you guys think of something more new then this?
[22:29] <etqw> kevinc answers: I think you didn't spend enough time playing it, if you have it confused with Battlefield. It has vehicle and weapons and you fight each other, but beyond that the similarities end. Spend some time on a server and give it a chance. I think you'll see that it is actually a very different game.

[22:29] <etqw> addshore asked: will there be a list of every single cvar anywhere? or is there already?
[22:29] <etqw> jRAD answers: User the listCVars command, or htmlCVars to get a full list

[22:29] <etqw> inf|Piddu asked: i 'm looking to upgrade my pc for etqw, can you tell me if is better to aim to a high profile grafic card or a powerfull cpu? in other words this game is more CPU dependent or GPU?
[22:29] <etqw> RR2|work answers: Really depends on what you have in your system already at the moment. ETQW does like them fast cpus though!

[22:29] <etqw> Tonismi2 asked: Is this channel a nice
[22:29] <etqw> Wils answers: the town in france? no

[22:29] <etqw> rotw asked: Virtua Fighter 5? Why not Quake 3 for venting?
[22:29] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: Virtua Fighter for a break from PCs. But Quake 3 CTF has a special place in our hearts

[22:30] <etqw> Seti asked: is there some overall reason why the Strogg Technicians needs a long loading time for them to revive team members?
[22:30] <etqw> SyncError answers: As a game function this is a balance for the fact that they can create spawn hosts, however, I'm sure from a technical stand point it takes longer to 'reboot' your team makes by hacking, in comparison to the crude 'jump start' given by the GDF paddles.

[22:30] <etqw> Ajial asked: (random question)Whats the average polygon count of your characters?
[22:30] <etqw> MoP answers: About 4,000 triangles for the player model's highest detail level. They get lower in polygon count as they get further from the player's view using a Level-Of-Detail (LOD) system

[22:31] <etqw> Tron- asked: Deep pan or thin base?
[22:31] <etqw> Wils answers: 'or'?

[22:31] <etqw> MonsOlympus asked: does the pizza taste nice?
[22:31] <etqw> daveducks answers: Well, it *smells* nice so far... yum yum...

[22:31] <etqw> calimer asked: Is there any way for me to run the game on windows 2000? The demo doesn't work but at amazon.com it says that the full version does support 2000
[22:31] <etqw> RR2|work answers: Unfortunately Amazon are wrong, the game only supports Windows XP and Windows Vista. Some people on our community forums have managed to get it working though.

[22:32] <etqw> grizzlybear asked: do you have to target companies for ad revenue or do they come asking for space (and who designs the ads as the gillette one is cool)
[22:32] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: Ads are sorted by Massive, they go through an approval process before they land in-game

[22:32] <etqw> SE|Squeaky asked: Is it possible to anwnser questions and eat pizza at the same time?
[22:32] <etqw> Wils answers: we're about to find out, i suspect

[22:32] <etqw> Mr2 asked: does the game have a ladder / ranking system?
[22:32] <etqw> Locki answers: Yes - You can check it out at http://stats.enemyterritory.com - We reward team-play (demonstrated by achieving medals that demonstrate your team-play prowess) with persistent military rankings.

[22:32] <etqw> NexAddo asked: Why don't the strogg have any transport vehicles?
[22:32] <etqw> Maleficus answers: The strogg aren't very worried about our environment, so they never carpool. They'd rather process us into stroyent. :-/

[22:33] <etqw> Link0 asked: [b]adman what kind of pizza
[22:33] <etqw> [b]adman answers: Relaxer ordered a bunch of different ones; he keeps getting something called "Hot Sausage Sensation", though I have no idea if that's an actual pizza or not

[22:34] <etqw> Rich asked: I'm going to University next year to study Computer Science MSc, is this a good start if I intend to get my foot in the door of the games industry?
[22:34] <etqw> daveducks answers: definitely, it's excellent background, gives you plenty of career choice if you decide games aren't your thing, and it's invaluable experience working with others. do it!

[22:35] <etqw> Maleficus answers: both are good!

[22:36] <etqw> [BRF]debconf asked: object space normal maps for statics possible ?
[22:36] <etqw> MoP answers: Not without modifying the code. However tangent-space normal maps are more versatile anyway!

[22:36] <etqw> valediction asked: another thing, whats the best way of getting to become a mapper for a dev team with no previous experience but a lot of will
[22:36] <etqw> daveducks answers: Make maps. Good ones :)

So far you have been putting one great game after another out there. Quake Wars is no diffrent. Please, for the love of all that's holy, keep it up.
[22:37] <etqw> kevinc answers: Thanks for the compliment. It is always great to hear from gamers that have been with id for all these years. We have some fun stuff in the works that the team here has been busy working on that I hope will not dissapoint :)

[22:37] <etqw> sophos`` asked: Since you dodged my question regarding ET:QW's bug count so very swiftly, I'll try a more serious question: Who's the hilarious geek that writes the team profiles?
[22:37] <etqw> [SD]Relaxer answers: That would be Bongoboy

[22:37] <etqw> tomppa_ asked: do you have a msg filter there or are my questions so bad that you ingore them??
[22:37] <etqw> jRAD answers: We have to turn off the questions occasionally to keep up.

[22:37] <etqw> Dr_Oopy asked: Would you guys consider producing a revamp of the Tribes series? :p

[22:39] <etqw> kevinc answers: Timothee is not on IRC right now. However, I will have him make a post on our community site about his Linux work.

[22:39] <etqw> rscl asked: will ETQW support wide screen resolutions, like XHD 1920x1200, natively?
[22:39] <etqw> Locki answers: Yes it does now (and I play in that resolution).

[22:40] <etqw> ZombieOnion asked: Why the change from WW2 Wolfenstein IP to sci-fi Quake IP?
[22:40] <etqw> Wils answers: ww2 quake would be a little strange (but it could be awesome)

[22:40] <etqw> knarf\ asked: Hi, i'm a linux guy and I like to play Tremulous (an independant game based on Q3 souce code), so I'm asking : Will etqw's engine be released under the GPL ?
[22:40] <etqw> RR2|work answers: Eventually maybe. That's up to id Software though.

[22:40] <etqw> bioXar|Mephisto asked: i didn't want to buy quake wars, but if i see how the developers are, i gonna think about it again^^
[22:40] <etqw> Locki answers: That's very very cool of you - But don't do it just cause of us... Get the demo, and practice offline against Bots for a while so it all starts to sink in. I will promise anyone that was initially unsure, if they will stick with it, it will really grow on them.

[22:42] <etqw> kevinc answers: Quakezero is currently being worked on here at id. Marty Stratton is the lead on the project. We've split off a second

[22:43] <etqw> Wils answers: the glass is too big, damnit

[22:43] <etqw> meg|work asked: Who came up with the "Enemy Territory" moniker? Is SplashDamage going to be making any ET style games for other companies IP? (e.g. non ID IP, not that ID IP doesn't rock, obv)
[22:43] <etqw> Locki answers: We started out with a list of features that didn't make it into Return to Castle Wolfenstein... This 'high concept' went back and forth between id Software and Splash Damage, and evolved into a 200 page Game Design Document for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Enemy Territory Quake Wars was much the same, with a real design colaboration taking place between the two companies.

[22:43] <etqw> cheesecake asked: blender is used in the office?!
[22:43] <etqw> daveducks answers: Well, I use it when not using Maya :)

[22:44] <etqw> Wils answers: won't take much to persuade us, it's more a matter of time. we're working out what to do regarding tutorials at the moment, but videos would be cool

[22:45] <etqw> H0uD1ni asked: i've done some little movies in ET... does ETQW have commands like cl_avidemo too for easy movie making?
[22:45] <etqw> Locki answers: There are quite a few really good commands for manipulating demos (like editing them, sever-side recording, exporting the cameras for ediiting, and fast-forwarding etc). There's a lot of info about this already on the community forums, but we also hope to fix up the User Interface at some time so the ciommunity can use all the cool tools we did for trailers and so on more easily.

[22:46] <etqw> [rm]dave asked: Will the Mac version be distributed on Steam too or will it be a physical dist?

[22:46] <etqw> DIA|DiaVoluS asked: when will it be possible to set up own ranked servers?
[22:46] <etqw> malarky answers: because of technical restrictions with our backend system, there's no plans to allow ranked servers outside of a secure hosting environment as yet. This could change in future though.

[22:48] <etqw> schachmat asked: How many game designers worked for etqw and was it hard to communicate and find compromises?
[22:48] <etqw> Locki answers: WE have two full time Game Designers (myself and Ed Stern) at Splash Damage, but we didn't design the game on our own. There's really a colaborative design process that spans Splash Damage, id Software, and our Level Design Team headed up by one of our two Lead Level Designers Mat 'Wils' Wilson. Everyone has input though.

[22:49] <etqw> Gwenn asked: Do you plan to update the medic bot to "build" (more often) a supply crate please ? For the moment it's about 1 time on 10000 games/maps, and bot don't do it on direct order via quick chat menu
[22:49] <etqw> Maleficus answers: Yes - there is work in progress to improve when/where they'll drop supply crates.

[22:49] <etqw> [AAB]Blucoll asked: what kind of application does the devloper sue to create QW

[22:51] <etqw> SE|Squeaky asked: Did jRAD (<etqw> jRAD answers: "Apricots") just spoil the secret, unrealeased last book in the "Hitch hikers guide to the Galaxy?"
[22:51] <etqw> RR2|work answers: Apricots are the key to everything. Especially if you have five of them.

[22:51] <etqw> fx|RabBit asked: will there ever be a rtcw2?
[22:51] <etqw> Locki answers: The next Wolfenstein is already in development at Raven Software under the direction of id Software

[22:51] <etqw> Lekdevil asked: Question for Kevin: will we see more joint id-SD projects in the future, and if so, what would they be like?
[22:51] <etqw> kevinc answers: Paul and I have been talking about what to do next for a while now. Our focus is still on ETWQ. But unless some publisher or other developers comes in and take them away, my hope is that Paul and I will be working together on the next game.

[22:52] <etqw> lucutus asked: Is Locki pleased that the "When it's done!" gags can finally dry up?

[22:52] <etqw> Zabii asked: Slashdot or Digg?
[22:52] <etqw> daveducks answers: Slashdot for the discussion, Digg for the stories, and Reddit for both :) [oops]

[22:54] <etqw> Wils answers: no, but that was

[22:54] <etqw> CU|CUdyin asked: what are you using as build-tool? scons + ccache + gcc/mingw?
[22:54] <etqw> RR2|work answers: Just standard Visual Studio (2005, SP1) on Windows. TTimo uses scons + gcc (and now also nasm) on Linux. (I'm sure I'm missing some things there though.)

[22:54] <etqw> nukkek asked: Can the missions in ET QW be won as easily as in W:ET, with for example a medic and and engineer going behind enemy lines? I'm still not going away until I'm answered :P
[22:54] <etqw> Locki answers: There is lots of potential for a couple of players working together to complete objectives and change the course of the battle.

[22:54] <etqw> mattie_ asked: I believe the beer is mixing up the questions/answers =)
[22:54] <etqw> daveducks answers: also my stupidfingers.... !

[22:55] <etqw> Papper asked: How any people do you have working on in-house tools?

[22:56] <etqw> AHoS asked: Do you guys regret announcing ETQW as early as you did?
[22:56] <etqw> Locki answers: Nope! Then nobody would have known how much effort all the team members put in :)

[22:57] <etqw> Grath asked: Which is best? ET:QW, Sex, or Pizza?
[22:57] <etqw> jRAD answers: All three would be an interesting combination

[22:57] <etqw> fx|RabBit asked: yeah well that is gonna bring tears of joy to some fellas i know :]
[22:57] <etqw> Wils answers: i just sniffed a piece of sweetcorn up my left nostril. it brought tears, but they weren't tears of joy

[22:57] <etqw> khetti\zzz asked: how is this a 'quake' game if it doesnt have skillful movement available? the current jump restrictions are rediculous, no two people run the same speed in the real world, if i cant chase someone down its not quake
[22:57] <etqw> Locki answers: You can affect your run speed by using single handed weapons to sprint faster, and pursuing the sprint speed upgrade.

[22:58] <etqw> DooMer- asked: Is there an ETA on when I'll be able to start calling my teammates clueless assholes via in-game VOIP?
[22:58] <etqw> malarky answers: we'll have VoIP in a future update, but no public date for that yet.
