In the “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford changes throughout the story. In the beginning of the story Rainsford loves to hunt. He feels that, “Hunting is the best sport in the world”.But after becoming shipwrecked on an island, his opinions about this sport will change forever. Instead of hunting, Rainsford is now the hunted.
At the start of “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford calls his friend Whitney “soft” because Whitney said that hunting may be cruel to the animal. But now that Rainsford is “playing the mouse”, instead of the cat, he can relate to what the animal is feeling. Rainsford now knows that hunting is inhumane now matter what the game is.
Rainsford also called General Zaroff a murder. Rainsford starts to understand that hunting is murder even if you are just killing an animal. “I am a hunter, not a murder”, said Rainsford. By the end of the story Rainsford begins to understand that these to things are very similar if not exactly the same.
At the very end of “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford actually kills General Zaroff. But, instead of killing for amusement, Rainsford killed for survival.
