I got a mp3 player cum 1 gb pen drive. To test it whether it is exactly 1gb or not I coiped some 900 MB of data into it and it is approximately 994 MB>

after inserting usb

dmesg shows sdb as the device.

I gave gparted /dev/sdb which does not show me thye whole 994 MB instead shows

unallocated 234MB

cfdisk /dev/sdb shows free space of 994 MB but when I create a new linux(type 83) partition on the device it shows a warning after quiting

Disk has been changed.

WARNING: If you have created or modified any
DOS 6.x partitions, please see the cfdisk manual
page for additional information.

But when i reboot my pc and check through dmesg it shows something as follows:

sdb: rw=0, want=5427736, limit=1944576
attempt to access beyond end of device
sdb: rw=0, want=5427736, limit=1944576
attempt to access beyond end of device
sdb: rw=0, want=5427736, limit=1944576
attempt to access beyond end of device
sdb: rw=0, want=5427736, limit=1944576
attempt to access beyond end of device
sdb: rw=0, want=5427736, limit=1944576
attempt to access beyond end of device
sdb: rw=0, want=5427736, limit=1944576

what does this mean.I am allocation whole 994 MB space for the new partition table.

even if I allocate a lesser amount like 400 MB it shows the same problem.

I have tried by giving at the beginning as well as at the end for partitioning but in vain.

I am trying to mount it in /media/disk but shows

mount: you must specify the filesystem type

After this I somehow tried mounting it using
mke2fs -j /dev/sdb

and mounted and it worked for mount.

but http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/USB_Based_FAQ as per this link when i did

cp -r /boot/grub/* /medi/disk/boot/grub/

echo '(hd0) /dev/sdb' > /mnt/boot/grub/device.map

grub-install --root-directory=/media/disk --no-floppy '(hd0)'

shows "file ...boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly"

what to be done now.How can I get live usb in a mp3 player cum 1gb drive.

The same steps worked fine for a normal smart and transcend usb drives and I am able to use them like a bootable live usb.

Any help
