The building
The residence is located across the street from the campus of the University of Antwerp in the Wolnatie building. In the Port of Antwerp, there are several “naties” which are companies that are several centuries old. The most famous is Katoennatie (cotton). Wolnatie founded in the 1890’ies imported wool in the beginning of its existence. Nowadays, they do mostly shipping, import, export and container services.
The building at 17 Rodestraat used to be a big stable and feeding place for the “natie” working horses. The higher floors were used for storage of various items. Later on, it became a business office. It then stood empty for several years prior to becoming a student residence. In 1986, the back side of the building was removed and turned into a parking place. The remaining part of the building was gutted until only the floors were left, and then rebuilt as a student residence.
In 1987, the first students arrived. In 2004, James Madison University rented the entire building for the “semester in Antwerp” program, and the first students arrived for the autumn, 2004 semester. At this point, “Wolnatie” officially became Antwerp Hall.
The building now has been acquired by FirstImmo and is being renovated, from September 2007 on it will be the main exchange students residence.
