He is sitting on a chair, while he reads a book called, “Escape from Displeasures.” All of sudden, however, Ackley barges into his dorm.Ackley: Hey! How’s it goin’!?Holden:Not too hot.Ackley:(As he’s roaming around Holden’s room, glaring at the stuff on his table -=chiffonier) Huh? Why not?Holden:(While reading the book)I left the goddam foils and stuff on the subway.Ackley:You what!? How could you have-Holden:We got on the wrong subway, for Chrissake. I had to keep looking at a map on the wall.Ackley comes over to him.Ackley:Hey, what the hellya reading?Holden:A goddam bookAckley:Any good?Holden:(Rolls eyes)Yeah. This sentence I’m reading is terrific.Ackley:Really? Wow, must be a pretty good book then.Holden sneers.Ackley:Hey. Lend me your scissor a second, willya?Holden:No. They’re way in the top of the closet.Ackley:Get ‘em a second, willya? I got this fingernail I want to cut off.”Holden:Fine.As Holden gets the nail cutter on top of the closet, Ackley plays with the fake phone made out of two cups connected by a string. He has one cup right on his mouth, and another on his ears.Ackley:(Talking using the fake phone)Hey! Why haven’t you called me?(pauses, to listen)Because you didn’t know how to call !?(pauses to listen again)You don’t use a remote control to call someone, you use a goddam phone! Finally, Holden manages to get the nail cutter, and gets down from the chair.Holden:Ackley! Stop being such a goof.Ackley:What? My brother hasn’t called me.Holden:That’s not even a real telephone for Chrissake. Here. Here’s your goddam nail cutter.Ackley:Tank you very mooch.Holden:UhuhAckley begins cutting his nails. Ackley:Hey, you happen to know whose Stradlater’s date, by any chance?Holden:No, I don’t know. Why?Ackley:No reason. I just can’t stand that guy. He’s one dude I really can’t stand. He’s always had this superior attitude all the time. He thinks he’s a hotshot and all, when he’s really not.Holden:Ackley, do you mind cutting your nails over at the table?Ackley:Man, that guy really knows how to you annoy you sometimes. This one day he was telling-Holden:Ackley!Ackley starts cutting his nails over at the table.Holden:Look, you have to give it up for that guy. He tries to be as generous as possible to anyone. But you, my friend, don’t think about that. Suppose, for example, you tell him you’re a dollar short from buying a toothbrush. You know he’d do? He’ll take out his wallet, take out a dollar bill, and give it to you as kindly as possible.Ackley:Hey, don’t gimme that. I brush my teeth, with my own toothbrush.Holden:Hell. No, you don’t, Ackley kid. I’ve seen you, and you don’t.Ackley:Stop calling me Ackley kid. God damn it. I’m old enough to be your lousy father.Holden(rolls eyes)Damn right you are.Ackley:Well, just cut out calling me-Stradlater opens the door, barging in, in a big hurry.Stradlater: Hey, how’sa boy?Ackley(whispering to Holden)I think I’ll get going. See ya later. Holden:Okay.Ackley quickly walks to the door, and storms out.Stradlater:What a kid. Hey, I think maybe I’ll take a fast shave. Holden:Where’s your date?Stradlater:Waiting in the Annex.SCENE 2Holden:Hey, whose your date? Fitzgerald?Stradlater:Hell no! I told ya, I’m through with that pig.”Holden:Yeah? Give her to me, boy. No kidding. She’s my type.Holden:So… whose your date if it isn’t Fitzgerald?Stradlater:Uh… Jean Gallagher.Holden: Jane Gallagher. Yeah, I know her. Stradlater takes a scoop of gel from a bottle and scrubs it on his hair. Holden:We used to play checkers together. I remember pretty damn well. She never moved any of her kings. She kept all her kings in the back row.A moment of silence, while Stradlater fixes up his hair using a comb. Holden:Listen, where ya’ going on your date with her? Ya’ know yet?Stradlater:Probably New York, if we have time. She’s expected to be home by nine-thirty for Chrissake.Holden:The reason she did that, she probably didn’t know what a handsome, charming bastard you are. If she’d known, she probably would’ve signed out for nine-thirty in the morning.”Stradlater:No kidding. Do that composition for me. Don’t knock yourself out or anything, but just make it descriptive as hell. Okay?Holden:Ask her if she still keeps the kings in the back row.Stradlater:Okay. Take it easy now.As Stradlater leaves, Holden is seen on the chair, thinking heavily about Jane. He’s had fond memories of her, and to the idea that Stradlater is out on a date with her is beyond him.
