Installing Apache

1.Downloading the server
2.Installing the server
3.Configuring the server
4.Restarting the server
5.Testing the server

1.Downloading the server
The apache server can be found on www.apache.org, the current version at the time of this howto is 2.2.2 which can be downloaded here http://www.reverse.net/pub/apache/httpd/httpd-2.2.2.tar.gz

or you can use wget to get it

$wget http://www.reverse.net/pub/apache/httpd/httpd-2.2.2.tar.gz

2.Installing the server
Once you have the server downloaded you will need to unpack the file by opening a terminal session and changing to the directory it is downloaded to and typing

$tar -xvvzf httpd-2.2.2.tar.gz
you will see several things scrolling on your screen while it unpacks, once it is done type

         $cd httpd-2.2.2
$./configure (Again several things will scroll across the screen)
$make (Again several things will scroll across the screen)
$make install (Again several things will scroll across the screen)

at this point apache should be installed on your system.

3.Configuring your server
To begin configuring your server you will need to change to the installation directory (default is /usr/local/apache2)

	$cd /usr/local/apache2/conf

next we will edit the httpd.conf file which is the configuration file for apache though the defaults should work for it you may want to change some settings follow the comments to do so.

	$vi httpd.conf

the default directory for your website is going to be /usr/local/apache2/htdocs, you will need to edit index.html file in there to fit your needs or replace it with your own.

4.restarting the server
If you need to restart the apache server such as in the case of changing the httpd.conf file you would type

	$/usr/local/apache2/bin/httpd -k stop
	$/usr/local/apache2/bin/httpd -k start

	or simply

	$/usr/local/apache2/bin/httpd -k restart

5.Testing the server
open your web browser and navigate to http://localhost your website should show up.
