Jonaver P. (18638): Hi, my name is Jonaver P. (18638). How may I help you?
ultra: hello, I was wondering what firmware you could recommend for the wrt54gl?
Jonaver P. (18638): What is the exact model and version number of your Linksys device?
ultra: wrt54gl v1
ultra: have you tried openwrt?
ultra: A few people on irc recommended it to me, but it looks a bit confusing.
Jonaver P. (18638): What seems to be the problem that you're experiencing with our device?
ultra: most people told me that there was no point in having the l model unless I had a modified firmware.
ultra: I'm debating about which firmware to use
Jonaver P. (18638): Okay.
Jonaver P. (18638): Please hold on for three minutes so that I can browse here on my resources regarding your concern.
ultra: having fun with google?
Jonaver P. (18638): Thank you for holding.
Jonaver P. (18638): This is the latest firmware version for your router: 4.30.9 1/30/2007 .
ultra: umm... I don't think the official one is what I'm talking about.
Jonaver P. (18638): What do you mean?
ultra: I'm asking what firmware is the best, out of openwrt, dd-wrt or the main firmware?
ultra: which do you recommend?
ultra: it seems openwrt and dd-wrt offer many more features
ultra: like ssh and client mode wireless
Jonaver P. (18638): What main firmware do you mean?
ultra: the official linksys one.
Jonaver P. (18638): I am sorry but our firmware can be specified by the individual model and version number. It can't be mixed up.
ultra: what are you talking about?
ultra: do you know anything about openwrt from http://openwrt.org ?
ultra: useless tech support people
Jonaver P. (18638): No, and we don't support that one.
Jonaver P. (18638): I am sorry.
ultra: oh, well, why not?
ultra: it seems to be a better firmware to me?
ultra: I'm already using it on one of my linksys routers.
ultra: I can ssh tunnel into my network from anywhere
ultra: it's great :)
Jonaver P. (18638): It is third party devices. Not recognized by Linksys.
Jonaver P. (18638): If you load that to your router, the warranty will be void.
ultra: well, I'm out of waranty, so, that doesn't matter
Jonaver P. (18638): Okay.
ultra: I'm just wondering if you knew if it was better?
Jonaver P. (18638): But we don't support that.
ultra: ok, I won't take that into consideration then.
Jonaver P. (18638): We don't support that. I am sorry. I will not recommend that one.
ultra: hmm... do you support the sveasoft one?
Jonaver P. (18638): It is a third party still. The only firmware that we would recommend is the one that is on the www.linksys.com/download
ultra: hmm... will you atleast help me setup ssh access with the linksys firmware?
Jonaver P. (18638): I am afraid we don't support other firmware software other than the ones that were officially released by Linksys, Ultra.
Jonaver P. (18638): I hope you understand.
ultra: yes, I do
ultra: so, with the official one
ultra: how do I setup ssh?
Jonaver P. (18638): Yes. Have you already loaded the officially released firmware of Linksys?
ultra: yes, I have it at the latest version.
Jonaver P. (18638): Good. And by the way, SSH is an OS related concern. This is concerning the "remotelyanywhere" software, right?
ultra: what?
Jonaver P. (18638): We will just need to open the needed ports on the router for this.
ultra: no, it's concerning ssh access to the router
ultra: no!
ultra: I want to be able to get a shell on my router
ultra: like, so I can type commands in and stuff
Jonaver P. (18638): Like remotely access the router?
ultra: yes
ultra: but, not just the web interface
ultra: like, a real *nix console, like you get with openwrt
ultra: it should be achiveable, no?
Jonaver P. (18638): Okay. As I have said, the official way of accessing the router is only through the web-based interface. If you have another server, like an FTP server, you can achieve this. But doing this is no longer our support.
ultra: hmm, you have no support for SSH?
Jonaver P. (18638): We can help you set your router for remote management but only via it's web based utility.
ultra: ssh is a pretty basic tool on any unix, why not?
Jonaver P. (18638): No. Ultra, I hope you understand that none of us here were trained for those as we were only trained for Linksys troubleshooting.
Jonaver P. (18638): Please contact your system administrator for your concerns.
ultra: I am my system administrator.
ultra: :)
ultra: and, I'm just fucking with you, hope you've enjoyed
ultra: by the way
ultra: my favourite comment was the ssh == remotelyanywhere one :)
ultra: that made me laugh so hard :)
ultra: and I'm sure everyone else I tell will get a kick out of it
ultra: thanks for being a great entertainment resource
ultra: :)
Jonaver P. (18638): Good.
Jonaver P. (18638): Any other concerns for today?
ultra: nope, cyas :)
Jonaver P. (18638): Bye.
