This howto will walk you though the steps to get MediaTomb, an upnp-av server, running on Debian or Ubuntu Linux. Some basic Linux knowhow is required.

1. First things first update your firmware in your PS3 to 1.8 if you have not yet done so.

Next install MediaTomb 0.9.1 on to your Linux box. (available form http://mediatomb.cc )

2. Add GPG key to APT. (must be root) At a terminal prompt type "wget http://apt.mediatomb.cc/key.asc -O- -q | sudo apt-key add -"

3. edit /etc/apt/sources.list and add the appropriate line from the list below.

Debian 3.1 (“sarge”)
deb http://apt.mediatomb.cc/ sarge main
Debian 4.0 (“etch”)
deb http://apt.mediatomb.cc/ etch main
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (“dapper”)
deb http://apt.mediatomb.cc/ dapper main
Ubuntu 6.10 (“edgy”)
deb http://apt.mediatomb.cc/ edgy main
Ubuntu 7.04 (“feisty”)
deb http://apt.mediatomb.cc/ feisty main

* On Ubuntu you will need to enable universe component to install all dependencies on Ubuntu.

4. Still at a root terminal type "apt-get update" APT will now reload its database and add mediatomb.

5. Install MediaTomb. At root terminal type "apt-get install mediatomb" APT will now download mediatomb and related dependencies.

6. To have MediaTomb start at boot time edit /etc/default/mediatomb and change NO_START from "yes" to "".

7. Edit config file /etc/mediatomb/config.xml. Add under <server> tag <protocolInfo extend="yes"/>

8. Start MediaTomb by typing at a terminal "/etc/init.d/mediatomb start"

9. Add Files to share. Open a web browser and goto http://localhost:49152/. On the left click on filesystem and then browse to the path you would like to share and click on the + icon at the top of the right side.

10. Now go back to your PS3 and search for your Linux box (if not all ready found) and enjoy your music and video collection.

If you are having problems stop your service "/etc/init.d/mediatomb stop" and run MediaTomb from the command line using the command "mediatomb -c /etc/mediatomb/config.xml".

This is how I found out that my server was not using the default port 49152 but was using port 49153. You can force the port number by adding <port>49152</port> under <server> in your config file. But if the port is all ready being used by another service MediaTomb will not be able to bind to it and will crash. Please use an open port number.

If you are still having problems you can try the forum at http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=440751 .

MediaTomb is also available for
Fedora Core
FreeBSD
Mac OS X
Ångström
Optware
