<JMC4988> Hi everybody
<JMC4988> I need some help setting up my linksys with dd-wrt v23sp2
<JMC4988> anyone available to help?
<elcasey> what's up?
<JMC4988> Basically
<JMC4988> I need to connect the linksys to an access point which is working in client mode
<elcasey> hmmm...I think there are some howtos out there about that. I don't have any experience with it myself.
<JMC4988> yeah
<JMC4988> I have been searching the net but I could't find anything
<JMC4988> does anybody in the channel has any suggestion?
<elcasey> I know I saw something about it, I think it was linked from the DD-WRT wiki
<BrainSlayer> what. you simply need to use your router as client device?
<-- hal3 has quit (Client Quit)
<JMC4988> ok, so it should be straightforward...
<JMC4988> but in the internet menu should I choose disable?
<BrainSlayer> under basic setup. you need to enable dhcp or any static setting
<BrainSlayer> since the this will be ip assigned to your wireless client interface in client mode
<JMC4988> ok
<JMC4988> the AP in client mode has the dhcp server disabled
<JMC4988> so I have to assign an IP in the same range as the AP
<BrainSlayer> no the dhcp serve can be enabled
<BrainSlayer> i mean the internet connection setup
<JMC4988> I see
<BrainSlayer> consider too to use a different subnet range on your client network
<BrainSlayer> otherwise you will create a network collision
<JMC4988> right
<JMC4988> because what I have is the following
<JMC4988> a wireless ADSL router
<JMC4988> which sends the signal to another building where I have an AP in client mode (WPA encryption)
<BrainSlayer> so if your ADSL router has the ip 192.168.1.1 on local network side, the ip of the local network on your client (lan) should be something like 192.168.2.1
<JMC4988> the idea is to link the AP to the Linksys and then create a new wireless network
<JMC4988> ok I understand
<BrainSlayer> the wan setup (internet connection setup) should be configured to dhcp or a static ip in 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.254 range
<BrainSlayer> the wireless basic setting needs just to be configured to Client
<BrainSlayer> and the wireless security section should reflect your wpa setup
<JMC4988> but I guess this is a new wireless network right
<JMC4988> with a completely different SSID
<JMC4988> and passkey
--> Werr (n=el@c-76-17-42-144.hsd1.ga.comcast.net) has joined ##dd-wrt
<JMC4988> my problem has been in connecting the linksys to the AP
<BrainSlayer> no
<BrainSlayer> in client mode you must set the ssid of your ap network
<BrainSlayer> since you want to join it
<JMC4988> ah...
<BrainSlayer> and the key must be identical too
<JMC4988> I thought I could create a new wireless network
<BrainSlayer> otherwise the authentication with your ap will fail
<BrainSlayer> no. in client mode you will not create a new network. you will join your network
<JMC4988> I understand
<BrainSlayer> its like a wireless network adapter in your laptop
<JMC4988> but wait
<JMC4988> the linksys is connecting the AP through the ethernet
<JMC4988> as if it was a PC
<JMC4988> when I connect a PC to the AP I have direct access to the internet
<BrainSlayer> ??? so your linksys is connected to your ap by cable?
<JMC4988> so I thought: ok, now I just connect the linksys instead and then create a new wireless network (different SSID and WPA key)
<JMC4988> exactly!
<BrainSlayer> i thought you want to connect to it wirelessly
<JMC4988> no!
<BrainSlayer> then you dont need client mode. you simply want to create a new wireless network. simply a accesspoint
<JMC4988> yes!
<BrainSlayer> which is the default setting of any linksys unit, using dd-wrt too
<BrainSlayer> in this case just consider the lan network settings
<JMC4988> right
<BrainSlayer> do you want to connect your linksys unit as bridge?
<JMC4988> now, this is where I struggle!
<JMC4988> I get quite confused
<BrainSlayer> answer the question
<JMC4988> what are the options? Bridge and...?
<BrainSlayer> bridge and routed/nated
<JMC4988> it could be routed I guess
<BrainSlayer> then you must configure your lan network to a different range
<JMC4988> bridge involves a new network range or not?
<BrainSlayer> so if your adsl router has 192.168.1.1, your linksys must be 192.168.2.1
<JMC4988> yes
<BrainSlayer> no bridge, will act in the same network range
<JMC4988> I see
<BrainSlayer> in bridge mode you must simply disable dhcp, lan network should be anything else the adsl router ip setting
<BrainSlayer> and the cable must be plugged into the switch instead of the wan port
<JMC4988> ah!
<JMC4988> I understand now
<JMC4988> I will try and if I have a problem I will get back to the channel
<JMC4988> thank you very much for your help
