Atkins Diet

1 – Who wrote/invented the diet?
Dr Robert C. Atkins wrote the diet – along with many other diet books based around the original one

2 – what is the basic nutrient breakdown of the diet?
The whole idea of this diet is to eat minimal carbohydrates (20g per day at most). Carbohydrates make your body put on weight, so having little carbohydrates will prevent weight gain. This, in turn increases fat and protein intake – not necessarily making you healthy, just thinner.

3 – Write an example of a daily menu you could follow
Breakfast: Bacon and Eggs with tea or coffee
Lunch: Trout with a small salad and water
Dinner: Lamb with a small salad and water

4 – Explain the scientific theory behind the diet
Carbohydrates are a weight-gaining nutrient (also packed with energy). Eliminating or severely cutting intake of this nutrient will result in no weight gain, but weight loss. However, the other foods you eat while on this diet are usually filled with Protein (good) and fat (bad), so while losing weight on this diet, you might not necessarily get any healthier. This diet is solely a weight loss diet, not to be used to become healthy.

5 – Evaluate the idea for it’s usefulness in long/short term by looking at: How long should you be on this diet, What are long term effects, and how this diet effects overall health (not just weight loss)
This diet should really not be used at all, because it disintegrates your health, unless balanced with a suffice amount of exercise the fats will build up inside the body to an un-healthy amount. Overall, it destroys health due to the lack of balance in the nutrients provided.
Grapefruit Diet

1 - Who wrote/invented this diet?
Terje Brooks Ellingsen

2 – What is the basic nutrient breakdown of this diet?

3 – Write an example of a daily menu you could follow
Breakfast: ½ grapefruit with 2 eggs, and 2 slices of bacon
Lunch: ½ grapefruit with salad (any dressing) and meat (any style, any amount
Dinner: ½ grapefruit with a buttered red or green vegetable, meat (any style) and 1 cup of coffee
Night-time snack: 240ml of skim milk or 240ml unsweetened tomato juice

4 - Explain the scientific theory behind the diet
The diet rides on the fact that grapefruits contain enzymes that when processed by the body act as a miracle weight loss reactant. Grapefruits are the only substance that contains these enzymes thus the name ‘grapefruit diet’

5 – Evaluate the idea for it’s usefulness in long/short term by looking at: How long should you be on this diet, What are long term effects, and how this diet effects overall health (not just weight loss)
The grapefruit diet is not meant for an extended use, only 2 ½ months. In this time, you should shed 50 oz, then afterwards you should be changing your long term diet to suit to stay at the same weight. This diet seems to have no strings attached, but some argue that the excessive consumption of meats and fats cannot be healthy.
