Being accepted by Canadians is along process for many immigrants moving to Canada. There are many hardships and issues that must be overcome in order for an immigrant family to fell accepted into society. Language barrier makes it difficult for immigrant families to be involved in society. The different levels of education requirements between Canada and the countries from which they immigrants are coming from make it harder to get jobs. Immigrant children struggle to learn and adapt to a new English society during their first couple years. Living in multi-cultural cities in different parts of Canada make most immigrant families feel more comfortable. Immigrated families continue to struggle in adapting to Canada culture due to the social constraints of modern society.
The language barrier is a difficult obstacle most immigrants must be overcome. The phrase language barrier is used in order to represent the difficulties faced by the people who go to a different speaking country. ("Language Barrier") One of the most recent issues with language barrier occurred in one of the most risky methods of transportation, where they lives of many people are inn danger. In May two planes flew over Vancouver and where 2.4 kilometers away from each other due to a 15 second delay which brought the two planes. In a plane 2.4 kilometers is not a lot. The man that was doing traffic control was an immigrant from china and questions can up if it was his fault because of his strong accent. A V from Canada wrote I thought all air traffic control operations were in English, everywhere. Isn't English the 'international' language of aviation? If so, how can a pilot be licensed to fly if he can't communicate with air traffic controllers in the industry's language?. (A V and Nelson W). A V questions why this man was hired or even got his license if his skills with English were not so good. Nelson W also from Canada wrote English is the international language of ATC [Air Traffic Control] ... I remember an incident with a flight school in Canada last year that was training student pilots from China. The students were grounded by the control tower until remedial English training took place. (A V and Nelson W). Teaching English to those who come from different countries is a hard task that takes months and maybe even years. Another thing that is hard for immigrant families to communicate with others over the telephone, especially in times of distress. When a parents only care is for their child that is in trouble it is hard to say words properly especially when the parents is not fluent in English and has a strong accent. In the case of the Garcia family, four year old Jennifer Garcia was riding on her bike and fell into a pool; she did not know how to swim and when her father found her he immediately called 911. Because he was a fresh immigrant and had a strong accent the dispatcher could not understand. In around 90 second of valuable time the dispatcher said I'm going to get somebody to help us with this language barrier here. The dispatcher then put him with an interpreter where he explained what was happening. By then it was too late and when the ambulance arrived Jennifer was pronounced dead. (Ruben Castilla Herrera ). Because of instants like this a new immigrant family can not possibly feel comfortable in their new society. This story would also complicate other immigrant families because there is no solution unless every 911 dispatcher learns ever possible language in order to assist all the calls. Shelter and safety are two things that a family needs to have in order to be someone in society. If they do not have that they are not considered in society. People need to accept that language is not a barrier but a part of our community fabric. Language is communication, and communication is not a barrier. We are the barrier if we do not understand different languages (Ruben Castilla Herrera ). Language barriers are extremely hard things to over come because it takes years.
The different levels of education from country to country make it much harder for immigrants to find a job that will support the family. Back where the family originally came from they may be very wealthy and well recognized by society. Now it is hard to give these people decent jobs that will help pay all expenses. A person who may be a doctor in their home country may not be as valuable here. Not every single one of the "international graduates are able to obtain a license to practice in Canada, which is seen by many people as a waste of talent." (Dey).
The internationally educated teacher couldnt work in her profession in Canada, and her husband, an engineer, also faced deskilling. Women can take the process of deskilling easier than men. My first job was as a secretary, she says, adding that the transition was made all the more difficult because of the deep recession and high interest rates in Canada at the time (Jetelina).
People go to Canada to have a better future for there children, job opportune, a better quality of life. Immigrants get caught in the middle of things they do not understand. They also receive false statements. They phrase He came to Canada thinking bright future for his family, as every other immigrant thinks (Jobs and Immigrants). Many of the foreign medical surveys are currently working in the medical field but others are delivering pizza, driving a cab and performing manual labor (Dey). Although these people are not happy with the situation they are in they are keen to obtain a license, so keen that 94 per cent would repeat their training here if required"(Dey) The main focus for Canadian citizens should be to make jobs as equal as possible, including the amounts paid to them. Wilcoxen says that they have a very diverse student population, so [they] want to find teachers that represent that student population." (Wilcoxen)
Foreign students bring a rich culture to our classrooms.
In order to feel accepted into Canadian society, immigrants need to accomplish and think about many things. When trying to make the decision of weather they will be moving to Canada there will always be a group of people who will say how good it is and how many more opportunities will be knocking on doors. Language is considered a barrier, and as if their years go by in Canada they will slowing speak now without having a strong accent. There are different levels of education requirements that is against almost all immigrants for almost all jobs. Children are also greatly affected in the process of learning English. All these are main aspects of what is needed in order for the families will being to fell confident and comfortable. Immigrated families struggle in adapting into Canadian society because of all the social restraints put on them.
