[15:03] <REDIRECTOR> ********************
[15:03] <ChuckWagon`> Thanks, REDIRECTOR.
[15:03] <ChuckWagon`> We're gathered to begin a most holy task - the task of looking at God as the Bible describes Him. We do not do this lightly but reverently.
[15:03] <ChuckWagon`> Before we talk about the Trinity, let's define it as best we can.
[15:03] <ChuckWagon`> Dr. Keith Chase gave me this definition and I think it's most Biblecal.
[15:03] <ChuckWagon`> The one God has revealed Himself to man as existing in three distinct persons called Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
[15:04] <ChuckWagon`> This study presupposes a few things. First, it presupposes the existence of God; it's sorta silly to study aspects of God while denying His existence. Secondly, it presupposes the Bible as our authority on God.
[15:04] <ChuckWagon`> So I will state the teaching in the form of a proposition with seven statements.
[15:05] <ChuckWagon`> Here it is.
[15:05] <ChuckWagon`> Proposition (1) If there is one and only one true God, AND (2) if the Father is called God, AND (3) if the Son is called God, AND (4) if the Holy Spirit is called God, AND (5) if the Holy Spirit is shown to be a person, AND (6) if these persons are shown to be distinct from one another, (7) THEN the doctrine of the Trinity is true.
[15:05] * Ron^ has joined #High_Velocity_Christians
[15:05] <ChuckWagon`> We will look at each of these items in turn. Some might appear obvsious - even self-evident, but we'll go through them one at a time.
[15:05] <ChuckWagon`> (1) There is one and only one true God.
[15:05] <ChuckWagon`> This is affirmed in the Old Testament.
[15:06] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Deuteronomy 4:35 "To you it was shown that you might know that the Lord, He is God; there is no other besides Him.
[15:06] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Isaiah 37:20 "Now, O Lord our God, deliver us from his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, Lord, are God."
[15:06] <ChuckWagon`> This is also affirmed in the New Testament.
[15:06] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 5:44 "How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?
[15:07] * ChuckWagon` Nasb 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
[15:07] * ChuckWagon` Nasb James 2:19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
[15:07] <ChuckWagon`> In the Old Testatament, we see God refered to as YHWH and this is generally indicated in our Bibles with the word "LORD" all in capital letters.
[15:08] <ChuckWagon`> Now the Bible does refer to false deities, but they do not concern us here and we won't get into that at all. Suffice it to say that the Bible is clear - there is ONE and ONLY ONE true, living God.
[15:08] <ChuckWagon`> (1) There is one and only one true God.
[15:08] <ChuckWagon`> (2) The Father is called God
[15:09] <ChuckWagon`> This is an easy one, but let me give you a couple of verses.
[15:09] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Psalms 89:26 "He will cry to Me, 'You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.'
[15:09] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Malachi 2:10 "Do we not all have one father? Has not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously each against his brother so as to profane the covenant of our fathers?
[15:09] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 11:2 And He said to them, "When you pray, say: 'Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.
[15:09] * ChuckWagon` Nasb 1 Corinitains 8:6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.
[15:10] <ChuckWagon`> So there really is no dispute here - the Father is called "God."
[15:10] <ChuckWagon`> (1) There is one and only one true God.
[15:10] <ChuckWagon`> (2) The Father is called God
[15:10] <ChuckWagon`> (3) The Son is called God
[15:10] <ChuckWagon`> Is Jesus called God?
[15:10] <REDIRECTOR> yes
[15:11] <ChuckWagon`> John 1 makes reference to "The Word" and this "Word" is clearly Jesus Himself.
[15:11] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[15:11] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
[15:11] <ChuckWagon`> The Word - God - became flesh and dwelt among us.
[15:11] <ChuckWagon`> Also ...
[15:11] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
[15:12] <ChuckWagon`> A "begotten God?"
[15:12] <ChuckWagon`> Who else could this be?
[15:12] <ChuckWagon`> Also there is this classic line...
[15:12] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
[15:12] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 20:29 Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed."
[15:13] <ChuckWagon`> If Jesus were not God, then Jesus ought to have said, "Because you have seen Me, you have blasphemed?"
[15:13] <_^Mrs_Tiger^_> ? ][nfinity
[15:13] <ChuckWagon`> Now - does Jesus have attributes of God?
[15:13] * ChuckWagon` sets mode: +v ][nfinity
[15:13] <ChuckWagon`> Go ahead, ][nfinity
[15:14] <][nfinity> John 1:18 in the NASB says "only begotton God" but I never read that... I've always used the KJV which says "only begotton Son"
[15:14] * ChuckWagon` just notes for everyone ... I have to leave at :40 past the hour for a pastoral appt. so ... I will be moving along.
[15:14] <][nfinity> any comments on that?
[15:15] <ChuckWagon`> ][nfinity: Yes, the textus receptus (the Gk. text the KJV uses) does have "son." The older manuscripts do have "God" there. Even the Wesscott & Hort, used by the Jehovah's Witnesses has theos there and so does their translation, though they don't capitalize "God" there.
[15:15] <ChuckWagon`> They ought to.
[15:15] <ChuckWagon`> They ought to by their own rule - a definite article is there before theos so they can't deny it.
[15:15] <ChuckWagon`> Does that help ][nfinity?
[15:15] <][nfinity> interesting
[15:15] <][nfinity> yes, thanks
[15:16] * ChuckWagon` sets mode: -v ][nfinity
[15:16] <ChuckWagon`> Does Jesus have attributes of God?
[15:16] <ChuckWagon`> Jesus said God alone is to be worshipped.
[15:16] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Mathew 4:10 Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.'"
[15:16] <ChuckWagon`> Yet Jesus says He ought to be honored as God is honored.
[15:16] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 5:23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
[15:17] <ChuckWagon`> Only God can forgive sins.
[15:17] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Isaiah 43:25 "I, even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake, And I will not remember your sins.
[15:17] <ChuckWagon`> But Jesus claimed He can forgive sins.
[15:17] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 5:21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?"
[15:17] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 5:22 But Jesus, aware of their reasonings, answered and said to them, "Why are you reasoning in your hearts?
[15:17] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 5:23 "Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins have been forgiven you,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?
[15:17] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 5:24 "But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins," He said to the paralytic "I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home."
[15:18] <ChuckWagon`> God alone is called the "Savior."
[15:18] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Isaiah 43:11 "I, even I, am the Lord, And there is no savior besides Me.
[15:18] <ChuckWagon`> But Jesus is called the Savior.
[15:18] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 2:11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
[15:18] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Titus 2:13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,
[15:19] <ChuckWagon`> And yes - that is correctly translated... Christ Jesus is our great God and Savior.
[15:19] <ChuckWagon`> YHVH is Israel's King.
[15:19] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Isaiah 43:15 "I am the Lord, your Holy One, The Creator of Israel, your King."
[15:19] <ChuckWagon`> But so is Jesus.
[15:19] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 23:3 So Pilate asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him and said, "It is as you say."
[15:19] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 1:49 Nathanael answered Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel."
[15:20] <ChuckWagon`> In Romans 10:9-13, it is said that one must trust in the name of the Lord Jesus to be saved.
[15:20] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
[15:20] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Romans 10:10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
[15:20] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Romans 10:11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed."
[15:20] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Romans 10:12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him;
[15:20] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Romans 10:13 for "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved."
[15:21] <ChuckWagon`> Yet this is a quotation from Joel 2:32 - and there, the "LORD" is YHVH.
[15:21] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Joel 2:32 "And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the Lord has said, Even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.
[15:21] <ChuckWagon`> Sorry... my Biblebot doesn't capitalize LORD properly.
[15:21] <REDIRECTOR> tis ok
[15:21] <ChuckWagon`> CHeck this out.
[15:21] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Isaiah 43:23 "You have not brought to Me the sheep of your burnt offerings, Nor have you honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings, Nor wearied you with incense.
[15:22] <ChuckWagon`> oops soorry
[15:22] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Isaiah 45:23 "I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.
[15:22] <ChuckWagon`> In Romans 14:11, Paul says this is God.
[15:22] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Romans 14:11 For it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall give praise to God."
[15:22] <ChuckWagon`> But who is it in Philippians 2:10????
[15:22] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Philippians 2:10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
[15:23] <ChuckWagon`> YHVH is to be pierced in Zechariah 12:10
[15:23] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Zechariah 12:10 "I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.
[15:23] <_^Mrs_Tiger^_> ? ][nfinity
[15:23] <ChuckWagon`> But in John 19:37
[15:23] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 19:37 And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."
[15:23] <ChuckWagon`> It's Jesus.
[15:23] * ChuckWagon` sets mode: +v ][nfinity
[15:23] <ChuckWagon`> Go ahead, ][nfinity.
[15:24] <][nfinity> when Isaiah says that God raised Jesus, does this mean God The Father raised His Son?
[15:24] <ChuckWagon`> ][nfinity: Yes, good.
[15:24] <ChuckWagon`> I think it's shown that the resurrection was a combined work of the Trinity.
[15:24] <ChuckWagon`> Jesus took back His own life, but this was by the power and will of the Father.
[15:25] <][nfinity> ok
[15:25] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
[15:25] <ChuckWagon`> Notice here that we speak of the Spirit of HIM (i.e. God) Who raised Jesus from the dead.
[15:26] <ChuckWagon`> So yes, all were involved... good questions.
[15:26] * ChuckWagon` sets mode: -v ][nfinity
[15:26] <REDIRECTOR> 7,12 please direct any other questions to Juliet or Redirector, Mrs Tig is being distracted right now with children. Thanks for your patience
[15:27] <ChuckWagon`> Jesus is called Creator (Colossians 1:16-17), unchanging (Hebrews 13:8), eternal (Colossians 1:17), and many other attributes of God.
[15:27] <ChuckWagon`> I think it's pretty clear that the Bible strongly points to Jesus Christ as being God. If He is not, then I wonder why these other things are there. I've never seen them explained.
[15:28] <ChuckWagon`> (1) There is one and only one true God.
[15:28] <ChuckWagon`> (2) The Father is called God
[15:28] <ChuckWagon`> (3) The Son is called God
[15:28] <ChuckWagon`> (4) The Holy Spirit is called God
[15:28] <ChuckWagon`> The Holy Spirit was present at creation.
[15:28] * _^Mr_Tiger^_ has left #High_Velocity_Christians
[15:28] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Genesis 1:2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
[15:28] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Job 33:4 "The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
[15:28] <ChuckWagon`> The Holy Spirit was involved in Jesus' incarnation.
[15:29] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 1:35 The angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.
[15:29] <ChuckWagon`> We have already seen how He was involved in the resurrection.
[15:29] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
[15:29] <ChuckWagon`> And the Holy SPirit is equated with God.
[15:29] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Acts 5:3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land?
[15:29] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Acts 5:4 "While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."
[15:29] <ChuckWagon`> In v. 3, Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit ... but in v. 4, he lied to God.
[15:30] <ChuckWagon`> Now even those denying the trinity will accept that the Holy Spirit is equated with God, but is the Holy Spirit a person or an impersonal force, like electricity?
[15:30] <ChuckWagon`> (1) There is one and only one true God.
[15:30] <ChuckWagon`> (2) The Father is called God
[15:30] <ChuckWagon`> (3) The Son is called God
[15:30] <ChuckWagon`> (4) The Holy Spirit is called God
[15:30] <ChuckWagon`> (5) The Holy Spirit is a person (a being with intellect, will and emotion)
[15:30] <ChuckWagon`> Notice how I define "person" ... a being with intellect, will, and emotion.
[15:30] <ChuckWagon`> Does the Holy Spirit qualify here?
[15:30] <REDIRECTOR> yes
[15:31] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Romans 8:27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
[15:31] <ChuckWagon`> That is intellect.
[15:31] * ChuckWagon` Nasb 1 Corinitains 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
[15:31] <ChuckWagon`> That is will.
[15:31] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Isaiah 63:10 But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them.
[15:31] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Ephessians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
[15:31] * PeaceMakr has left #High_Velocity_Christians
[15:31] <ChuckWagon`> That is emotion.
[15:31] <ChuckWagon`> The Holy Spirit speaks as a person.
[15:32] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Mark 13:11 "When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit.

[15:32] <ChuckWagon`> Look at this one...
[15:32] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Acts 13:1 Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
[15:32] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Acts 13:2 While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
[15:32] <ChuckWagon`> The Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for ME"
[15:33] <ChuckWagon`> That sounds pretty personal.

[15:33] <ChuckWagon`> The Holy Spirit is a witness.
[15:33] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Acts 5:32 "And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."
[15:33] <ChuckWagon`> Notice the personal pronouns here in these reverences ...
[15:33] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 14:16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
[15:33] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 14:17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
[15:34] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
[15:34] <ChuckWagon`> I have a bunch more, but my time is short ... so I'll move on. Suffice it to say, the Holy Spirit is clearly acting as a personal being.
[15:34] <ChuckWagon`> (1) There is one and only one true God.
[15:34] <ChuckWagon`> (2) The Father is called God
[15:34] <ChuckWagon`> (3) The Son is called God

[15:34] <ChuckWagon`> (5) The Holy Spirit is a person (a being with intellect, will and emotion)
[15:34] <ChuckWagon`> (6) These persons are distinct from one another.
[15:34] <ChuckWagon`> Here... I only need refer to the baptism of Jesus.
[15:35] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened,
[15:35] * ChuckWagon` Nasb Luke 3:22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased."
[15:35] <ChuckWagon`> Jesus on the shore... the Spirit descended on Him... the Father spoke from heaven.
[15:35] <ChuckWagon`> Well... I'll give one more.
[15:35] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 14:16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
[15:35] * ChuckWagon` Nasb John 14:17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
