--Lead Developer / Systems Engineer
Provide database design / management, custom application design / programing, and hardware systems engineering for a digital music content processing and delivery company.
Tasks and Accomplishments:
Designed and implemented a large-scale parallel processing system for transcoding audio to arbitrary targets and bit rates, image asset transform/format conversion, and template-based metadata generation. System is able to generate outlet-specific product structures for more then 29 retailers in any combination of 33 different audio encodings and bit rates. New retailer integration is accomplished by updating an outlet xml descriptor file that is used to drive the client software (end-user cli application used by content operations). Additional processing needs are met by simply adding new worker-servers and installing the transcoding server software. Researched the feasibility of extending the system for high-throughput video processing.
Designed and assembled our Network Storage infrastructure for media asset storage using Linux, LVM, XFS and NFS. Current capacity: 13TB. scalability: 9EB. Usable throughput able to saturate 1gb ethernet link. (additional performance can be gained by adding additional controller channels and ethernet devices).
Provided day to day support of staff usage of our java/servlet/jsp web console for outlet, label, license and metadata management and mod_perl/apache system for accounting tools and external client tools. Added additional functionality as needed, with a focus on scalability and abstraction for future ease of update and management.
Administrated and signifigantly expanded company database (MySQL).
Designed and implemented a system for high capacity audio cd/dvd ripping and database updates using a 300 cd/dvd changer with robotics, custom robotics control software and ui in perl/TK on a linux platform.
Interfaced with music retailers engineering staff for bulk content delivery using SCP, SFTP and Rsync.
Mentored junior developers.
Managed outside consulting developers.

--Systems Engineer
--http://www.museresearch.com / http://www.plugorama.com / http://www.kvraudio.com
Provided systems administration, programming, and system architecture work for a music industry startup dedicated to creating a "next generation" linux-based audio hardware device.
Duties included systems programming in C and perl for network-facing, on-device software update/installation management. Linux kernel patch feature research (preemptive scheduler, linux capabilities), patch / build maintenance and automation. Designed, implemented and supported our custom software build automation that generated daily builds from source control to binary rpm package for testers, documentation authors and other developers.
Initiated base system RPM package list management and systems imaging automation.
Provided in-house linux/unix user support, and remote CVS repository / web server administration.
--PrO Unlimited, Burlingame CA 3 month contract
--Perl / SQL Developer
--http://www.prounlimited.com
Performed contract Perl/SQL programming services for a large Contingent Workforce management company. Primary responsibility was to provide bug fixes to an extensive (75K lines of code) web-based application written in perl/Postgres.
Designed and delivered complex ad-hoc financial reports to a variety of high profile clients.
--Penguin Computing, San Francisco, CA 3 month contract
--Contract Web Development
--http://www.penguincomputing.com
Following a second company wide layoff, I contracted with Penguin to design and implement an object-oriented CRM system in PHP/MySQL. The system implemented traditional CRM support incident life cycle features. System integrated with Penguin's custom products Bill of Materials database (populated primarily by systems designed by the customers, using the web-based "systems configurator"), and allowed the support staff to associate support actions with any customer's unique server at the individual partID level. System back-fed to Sales and Customer database applications to allow the sales personnel to have immediate access to any customer's support history. System also allowed for reporting on in-the-field component failure rates, among other metrics. Project was completed under budget and on time with documentation and UML spec.
--Penguin Computing, San Francisco CA March 2001 - October 2001
--Web Developer
--http://www.penguincomputing.com
Web / Database / Systems programmer for a linux-specialized server hardware vendor.
Maintained and extended in-house database and communications software written primarily in php, perl and python.
Debugged and maintained cross-platform database sales event mapping software using python, mysql and php.
Led SAP to mysql/php systems integration project (apache/mod_perl/dbi/mysql,xml, SAP Business Connector, custom SAP service call handler). Created and maintained user utility database applications in php, perl and python.
Debugging and functionality additions to the customer-facing web component "system configurator" that allowed customers to create individual hardware systems configurations for Penguins on-demand manufacturing chain.
