Recently when I was working on a Linux distribution named Source Mage, I began to look at the General Public License and the foundation that made it. Many people look at what the free Software Foundation does as they look what makes Linux well known, but for me I didn't look first when I started to use Linux, or even started to develop for the operating system until I joined a team. The Free Software Foundation is a foundation that fights for computer user freedoms. These four freedoms that they focus on are “the freedom to run the program, for any purpose. The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs, access to the source is required. The freedom to distribute to your neighbors, and the freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public so that the whole community benefits” (Stallman, 18). As I looked deeper in to the thoughts of free software I started to gain my own views on how open source and free software should be, which the Free Software Foundation views just didn't fit in to my own views. There is two main open source licenses, which means two different camps within the open source communities, the GPL and the BSD licenses. Each have different views toward how users should be allowed to change the code and the politics that each license has behind it. Recently the Free Software Foundation decided to update the General Public License to version three since the GPLv2 was released in June of 1991. This allowed the Free Software Foundation to add things to the new version of GPL, which stopped companies from using GPL code like they used to, which restricted users even more to how the source is used. The free Software Foundation plays a lot of politics in the world of free software, Which many people in the open source community do not like very much, since GPL restricts users then what most people think what free software should be. Within the community of GPL there is GNU which is made by the free Software Foundation and there is the Linux kernel which is made by Linus Torvalds with many volunteers. The Linux developers are fighting the newest version of the GPL since it has many flaws in the wording of the license for example within the GPLv3 license it states that the person that made the code just has to add a line Anyone can distribute derivative works of this program as proprietary software, so now the program can be used for proprietary means(GPLv3 draft sec 7). This provision might allow companies or users to go around the GPL from protecting the four software freedoms that it was created to protect.
