noesc: you around buddy?
_MMA_: Yep
noesc: cool
noesc: What steps do I need to take to get on the dev team for Gutsy
noesc: I'll probably be one of the first musicians using ubuntustudio in a professional studio
_MMA_: For Ubuntu Studio?
noesc: yeah
_MMA_: 1 sec. (Phone)
noesc: I'll be using all of the midi support to the max, I have loads of old hardware that I still use
noesc: Plus I know C, ruby, perl, mad debugging background
_MMA_: Im back.
noesc: wb, heh
_MMA_: Well the team is pretty set.
noesc: I don't like that answer :)
_MMA_: How much do you know about how Ubuntu works?
noesc: I made the first ubuntu server liveCD
noesc: which we use in production in one of the largest credit card processing companies
noesc: Our entire data-center is comprised of ubuntu
_MMA_: Hmm...
noesc: So I have experience with making the isos as well
_MMA_: Your knowlege sounds good.
_MMA_: Live and ncurses disks?
noesc: and we use roughly 120 servers in our data-center
noesc: yes
_MMA_: Regular d-i installers?
_MMA_: Cool.
noesc: yeah
noesc: I stripped all of the desktop livecd out, hacked the initrd stuff to boot the cd into read-only mode for security reasons
_MMA_: Ok. I cant count you out. :)
noesc: so now we have a cluster of about 12 web servers that are all read-only diskless ubuntu installs
_MMA_: Really, we get so many under-qualified people its insane. Well-intentioned but severely lacking.
noesc: I don't doubt it
_MMA_: Thats why the LP team is closed.
_MMA_: The -dev tean.
noesc: Yeah
noesc: You should ask for resumes
_MMA_: Your nick looks really familiar actually.
noesc: that would seed out a lot
noesc: I was speaking with you the other day
noesc: I got into your private room and you kicked me out remember :)
_MMA_: lol
_MMA_: Ok.
_MMA_: :)
_MMA_: Its locked now. :)
noesc: props
noesc: you left it in one of your irc logs
_MMA_: Really, we dont do it to be dicks. We just need a quiet place to work. :)
noesc: I understood
_MMA_: We're all it the other channel as well so we see it all.
_MMA_: Hmm...
noesc: So anyway, I'll put my resume online and you can look over some of the stuff I've done and am currently working on
_MMA_: Ok. I wish this was last week.
noesc: I still don't like that answer :)
_MMA_: UDS is coming up and alot will slow down for a week or so.
_MMA_: No no.
noesc: I will be using ubuntustudio every day in my studio :)
_MMA_: I would just try to get the guys to chat with you but timing is bad.
noesc: and I know too much about linux and debugging to just sit back and wait for bug fixes
noesc: ok, no problem
_MMA_: But really I like what your saying.
_MMA_: Mind some personals?
noesc: not at all
_MMA_: Age? Where ya from?
_MMA_: Im 31. In the states. Married, kids.
noesc: 25, I am from Texas but a large company in Los Angeles hired me about 2 years ago and moved me to Venice Beach in LA
noesc: Single, lots of free time
_MMA_: Im a stay at home Dad. I have some time as well.
noesc: I just got my vocal booth finished and will be producing for a lot of hiphop and rock artists
_MMA_: Nice.
noesc: my title at work is Sr. network and security engineer / systems analyst
_MMA_: I did live sound work for metal bands.
_MMA_: I just hope you dont have too high a expectation for Ubuntu Studio. :)
_MMA_: There will be some kinks.
noesc: well I didn't dig 64studio out of the box
_MMA_: Why?
noesc: jack didnt work well, it didnt work well with two soundcards plugged in by default
noesc: hydrogen would not play through jack whatsoever even though it was configured properly
_MMA_: Hmm... Im not sure US will be any better.
noesc: well I am not going to fix 64studio because im not on their team
noesc: if I was workign with you guys, it'd be fixed :)
_MMA_: ;)
noesc: working*
_MMA_: That would involve packaging and bug fixing.
_MMA_: We would need to get you hooked up with MOTU.
noesc: which is breezy for me
_MMA_: Ok. We'll go like this:
_MMA_: UDS is about a week or so.
noesc: do you guys use svn?
_MMA_: Everyone will be gone for that.
noesc: ok
_MMA_: We'll try to get something going after that.
_MMA_: We use BZR. a Ubuntu tool.
noesc: Ok, I'll install it later at home and get familiar. Does it do file locking when things are checked out? Or merge like svn?
_MMA_: Im unsure about the locking.
_MMA_: Ill also tell you Im management.
noesc: I knew that, that's why I messaged you. :)
_MMA_: I intentionally stayed out of packaging so I could focus on other things.
_MMA_: So many people really overload themselves.
_MMA_: I cant do it.
noesc: true
noesc: phone, brb
_MMA_: k
noesc: well what kind of project management tool do you guys use?
_MMA_: Launchpad.
noesc: does it show % of completion, and are they abiding by using it?
_MMA_: Im unsure.
noesc: on our team here at work I've learned that is super key
noesc: I set our management tool up here, but every 2 weeks people slowly stop using it
noesc: but basically it someone is behind, we find someone nearest completeion of another task and have him help the other member finish
_MMA_: We do some things by the seat of our pants but its mostly because we're still learning the Ubuntu system.
noesc: s/it/if
noesc: true
_MMA_: We were pretty green at the start.
_MMA_: We still kinda are in the grans scheme of things.
_MMA_: *grand
_MMA_: But we are pretty well accepted into Ubunt.
_MMA_: *Ubuntu
_MMA_: We will be as official as Xubuntu.
noesc: Ubuntu grows so widly though that as soon s v1 is out, the bug reports will start flooding in, and as long as we dont get overwhelmed with those and handle them, it should progressively get better very rapidly
_MMA_: We get sponsored to the UDS's.
noesc: that's awesome
_MMA_: Its a question of manpower. There's ALOT of bugs. :)
_MMA_: Most arent show-stoppers.
noesc: exactly
noesc: who else on the team is a musician?
noesc: ie: if someone complains about midi, who actually has the equipment to test the problem?
_MMA_: ttoine.
noesc: ya ive spoken with him loads, very cool guy
_MMA_: He's talking in the channel now. He's our HW tester.
_MMA_: Peoblem is we need people who can identify the problem and go after it.
_MMA_: Sometimes though other things stop us.
_MMA_: Like what Debian is doing.
_MMA_: Or freezes.
noesc: is there going to be a 64 and 32bit release or strictly 32?
_MMA_: We will have to release the 64bit later.
noesc: perfect
_MMA_: It will come but just 32 at 1st.
noesc: no need to add additional problems at first
noesc: I have two 64bit machines, two delta 1010s, so I am capable of helping with both
_MMA_: It really just came down to time and the lack of a amd64 machine.
_MMA_: Cool.
_MMA_: I have one but I run 32bit.
noesc: me too
noesc: I run 32bit on all of our 64bit machines at work
noesc: except our 64bit Ubuntu Xen server
_MMA_: Nice.
noesc: the ceo of my company is extremely supportive of the opensource community, he could provide the machines
noesc: we've send loads of equipment to knoppix trying to get their xen development stuff to 64bit, which never happened
noesc: s/send/sent
_MMA_: :(
noesc: no biggie though, we used them for years before I came onboard and made our ubuntu server livecds and migrated off knoppix :)
noesc: so he didn't mind giving back to them
_MMA_: I think Ubuntu is a better fit.
_MMA_: The community is unmatched.
noesc: Well it wouldn't do read-only, so it wouldn't work in our env
noesc: I had to hack the bootstrap to hell to get it to work
noesc: zero documentation
_MMA_: lol
_MMA_: Kinda how we feel.
_MMA_: Everybody has done what we are doing but very little info. :)
noesc: I think they get it working on their machines and that's about it
noesc: a/v is totally different, there's too many varient in hw
_MMA_: Dont you know it.
_MMA_: Join #ubuntustudio-devel
_MMA_: Chat a bit.
_MMA_: Im not saying your on the team yet. We'll see what the guys think. :)
noesc: haha no problem :)
