Leadership is not just a place, its not just a position, and its not a secret code that cant be deciphered by ordinary people. Leadership is an evident set of skills and abilities. Good, effective leaders should have certain qualities that distinguish them from everyone else. Some of such qualities include being able to lead by example walk the walk so you dont have to talk the talk, which usually results in respect from those under you. Another quality a good leader should have is a specific skill in the area that he/she is leading (For example, you wouldnt want to lead an army if you had NO military experience), however, this is true for any leadership position, not just military offices. The last prominent quality a leader should have is being able to co-operate with others and keep his/her groups morale high. A good leader should have at least those three qualities.
Section leader is no different. A section leader should have enough experience in playing and music to know how to help each individual in his/her section with any issue that needs to be dealt with. Any leader in a marching band should be able to lead by example (when called to attention, instead of screaming at people, just go to attention, and others will follow suit; People are not retarded). If they cant do that, they dont deserve to hold a leadership position. As a section leader, you should also get along with your section, or it will be very difficult to handle the group and prepare them for performances.
I know I have had my share of negative experiences with the leaders of this band, and have displayed negative or disruptive behavior on much more than just one occasion, however, I think that I am ready to endure an attitude adjustment, and take on this huge, yet reasonable responsibility. I want to broaden my horizons, and open new doors as a musician and as a person. The responsibility of such a work-entailed position will help keep me motivated both in band as well as academics and other aspects of life. I know I am lacking in some areas of skill that are normally required to be a leader, but I feel I can learn by gaining experience, and as time goes on, I will become an excellent leader, and I promise neither you nor Plant City High Schools Raider Marching Band will be disappointed. As a saxophone player for eight years, and having played alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone for at least two years a piece, I feel I am well qualified in the instrumental skill department. As for the third prominent quality I listed earlier, I know full well how tough it is to get multiple individuals in a group to co-operate with one another, but I feel that I can use my people skills (though it doesnt show often, I DO have some) to my advantage here, and keep my section under wraps and ready to go when prompted. Ill conclude by saying this: I promise you, you will not be disappointed in your choice if you appoint me Saxophone section leader. I will use my authority ONLY when 100% necessary and I will lead the greatest saxophone section Plant City High School has ever had!
