a) there is no a because i copied and pasted this from something else I wrote that did in fact have an a but it doesn't apply here
b) Google for VirtualDubMod (one word, not regular VirtualDub) and install it.
c) Once VDM is installed, open it up and open the avi you saved.

video compression/fixes:
d) Go to "Video" and select "Full processing mode"
e) Video -> Frame Rate -> "Change so video and audio durations match (xxxx fps)" -- This fixes the out-of-sync problems, regular VDub doesn't use this properly as far as I know.
f) Video -> Compression -> XViD (I use "9.90 target quantitizer" myself for quality, but find whatever works for you, lower number = larger size and YouTube'll destroy the quality anyways) (you do have XViD installed right? if not, get it, it's the best compression :p)

audio compression:
g) go to "Streams" then "Stream List"
h) rightclick "Source: Input AVI file" and select "Full processing mode"
i) rightclick source -> compression
j) select whichever compression you like best for a small filesize, you may have to experiment a bit to find a good compromise between filesize and quality. I personally use "MPEG Layer-3 -> 56 kBit/s, 22,050 Hz, Stereo (7KB/s)"

saving:

k) file -> save as.. name it whatever, save as type .avi, let it sit there for a few minutes as it does its thing
l) You'll probably want to view your video before you upload it to make sure that the audio/video quality is good and that it's not out of sync. If the file size is too large or the video/audio quality is poor, for your standards, try a different compression method.
m) if you're happy with it, upload it to youtube :)
n) after you upload it, you'll probably want to delete the gigabytes-huge original file or else your hard drive will probably fill up really fast, heh.
