5) Global Work for Knowledge Workers: Which emerging global cities will attract the next generation's "best and brightest"? (We can help identify sources of information)
The question should be answered for younger generation vs. seasoned professionals, and for engineers vs. other professionals. Some criteria to look at may be:
Quality of Life (culture, arts, music, climate, outdoor recreation)
Diversity (demographics, industry, etc.)--study demographics, immigration, net migration to the city, industry variety, etc.
Openness
Critical Mass (population, industry, etc.)
Competition: 'Survival of the fittest'--why competitiveness (high attrition, lots of job opportunities, etc.) is good
University presence (and its contribution to the local
metro)--measure how a university contributes to the local economy (in
many cases, universities are stand-alone within their local city,
with no desire to affiliate/contribute)
Venture Capital Funding/ Ease of entrepreneurship--someone needs to
dole out the cash and make it easy to "start-up". This is KEY. With
typical 15%+ interest rates in developing countries and a lack of
investors, how is a start-up company supposed to survive?
"Risk" tolerance--how much is the culture willing to "take risks"?
I think this is really important.
