Dual 800mhz/800mbits = 2mhz a mbit (seems a tad much, but this reference may be off and it is a PIII - an Opteron or Celeron will perform clock for clock better)
Dual 1.4 ghz = 1.4gbits
Dual 3ghz = 3gbits
What should I use for the main router to the T1/T3/OC? Preferably Smoothwall. Oh, yeah, I also need a nice 10,000 RPM drive in case it ever needs to use swap. *gasp - this should NEVER EVER happen especially on a router* What else? Well, in the future a front LCD panel displaying how much bandwidth at that time is being used would be ultra-cool. I could even take on a bigger mod and make it a 2U rack and integrate the gigabit switch into it. 24 port should be fine, by the time I use all of those ports I will need better hardware. :-)
At first I might be able to use a socket 478 solution (such as the Tyan Flex ATX, dual gigabit, PC2700, s478). But to err on the cheap side: Any s478 mobo and add two gigabit ethernet PCI cards. mATX in 1U? We'll see... :-)
Everything needs to be wired via Gigabit. *sigh* No PoE... (unless I get away with 10/100 to just each AP, as I am NOT going to need a gigabit to just one AP, but 500mbits would be nice...)
1,500 + 10,000 + 10,000 = 21,500, About 4,300 homes...
4,300 * 50% with comps = 2,150.
Most people have comps with internet, so...
2,150 * 75% = 1,615 with some form of Internet. If I can just get 20% (I would love to have 50% of the Internet population in that area) to switch...
325 users! I will most likely get more, though. :-)
$12,600.
75% get 512K plan. 25% get 1MB. 1% "of houses" are business, but only 25% of them will get my Internet.
9555 + 3920 + 990 = $14,465 adjusted. Give or take... :-)
