[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:17:53] <spiekey>	would you mabybe be so kind and explain me this? http://www.open-xchange.org/pipermail/general/2007-March/053457.html
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:18:50] <mbraun>	for sure :)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:18:58] <spiekey>	cool! :)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:19:00] <spiekey>	thanks
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:19:28] <mbraun>	lets start with... OX 0.8.x
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:19:42] <mbraun>	this is the GPL/CC Version of the commercial Open-Xchange Server 5
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:20:08] <mbraun>	Collaboration Edition, Advanced Collaboration Edition does not really exist
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:20:28] <mbraun>	for commercial customers there is a Small Business Server and a Advanced Server Editon
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:20:36] <mbraun>	which differs in the named user licenses and stuff like that
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:21:18] <mbraun>	this version is the currently most feature-complete one
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:21:25] <mbraun>	it exists since ~2005
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:21:38] <mbraun>	any questions about 0.8 so far yet? .op
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:22:00] <spiekey>	just a sec. i need to read and understand it ;)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:22:37] <spiekey>	ok, please continue :)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:23:02] <mbraun>	ok, so you will geht the most features you've mentioned in you mail with that software
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:23:24] <mbraun>	0.8 has the Codename "Hymalia" (just for information)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:23:47] <spiekey>	ok
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:24:11] <mbraun>	Codename Hyperion (that one which the nice ajaj interface) is the new one
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:24:33] <spiekey>	so the OX 0.8.x is the same as Open-Xchange Server 5?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:24:36] <mbraun>	jep
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:24:39] <spiekey>	ok
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:24:57] <mbraun>	Hyperion has been developed under "stealth mode" to be a product for the hosting market
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:25:05] <mbraun>	like 1&1 uses it
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:25:21] <mbraun>	the the Hyperion Community Edition is nearly the same as the hosting edition
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:25:43] <mbraun>	The technology used in the Communiy/Hosting Edition will be used in further products of curse
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:26:31] <mbraun>	so there are two community editons right now
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:26:42] <mbraun>	one (0.8.6) which is OX5 and the new one
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:26:58] <spiekey>	Hyperion is the new one?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:27:01] <mbraun>	aye
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:28:01] <spiekey>	which one has those Portal, Project, Forum, pin board and bookmark features?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:29:16] <mbraun>	OX5
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:29:42] <mbraun>	but the development of hyperion has not stopped i can assure you ;)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:30:27] <spiekey>	why would the hyperion development stop? i thought this is the new one?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:30:38] <mbraun>	no it will not ;)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:30:49] <mbraun>	i said this because at the moment ox5 has more features
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:31:04] <spiekey>	hehe
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:31:14] <mbraun>	and hyperion has the more recent technology
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:31:18] <mbraun>	not only the gui
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:31:32] <mbraun>	but the whole backend is new
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:31:43] <spiekey>	ok, let me recall...
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:31:45] <mbraun>	so these are some kind of different generations
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:32:15] <spiekey>	hyperion is the new one. But has less features than OX5/0.8.x?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:32:29] <spiekey>	and 1&1 is using hyperion.
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:32:48] <spiekey>	why would i want to buy OX then? Is this just the issue of support?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:33:31] <mbraun>	you mean why should you buy ox5?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:33:48] <spiekey>	yes
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:33:51] <mbraun>	hyperion is not a sold product at the smb market right now as there is only a hosting edition
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:35:10] <mbraun>	well... i am no marketing guy but there is a comparision afaik
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:35:15] <mbraun>	just let me search
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:36:42] <mbraun>	mhm they've hidden it somehwhere at the new website ;)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:37:20] <mbraun>	but in the commercial version of ox5 you have support (for integration, migration), maintanace (updates), a graphical user interface and stuff like that
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:37:32] <mbraun>	and included licenses for the outlook oxtender
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:39:16] <spiekey>	but with hyperion you have a graphical user interface too, dont you?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:39:18] <mbraun>	and some nice packages installation/update scripts for enterprise distributions
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:39:32] <mbraun>	yeah, a user interface you have at both
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:39:37] <mbraun>	i meant the _admin_ interface
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:39:57] <spiekey>	well, but if you are a little experienced with it you can live without it, right?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:44:04] <mbraun>	experienced and have a good insurance ;)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:44:28] <spiekey>	why insurance?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:44:33] <mbraun>	i mean if you are a it administrator and use the GPL Version at a company
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:44:44] <mbraun>	something stops working, crashes, whatever
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:45:02] <mbraun>	then you have to tell you boss why dozen/hundert of people cant work ;)
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:45:18] <mbraun>	so these incidents are covered by a support agreement
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:46:34] <spiekey>	so you are saying the GPL version is not stable enough yet or depends on too many 3rd party modules?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:46:48] <mbraun>	no thats not about the stability
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:47:03] <mbraun>	there is a opensource ox running with 200k students in austria afaik
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:47:12] <spiekey>	apache2 is a great reliable sw, too. And i have never needed professional help
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:47:29] <mbraun>	yeah, you as a person not, me not too
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:47:47] <spiekey>	the community should cover this in my optionion.
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:47:47] <mbraun>	but if you want to integrate such a solution at a company you would rely on a professional support
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:48:03] <spiekey>	unfortunatelly it looks like the community around OX is pretty small
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:48:29] <mbraun>	mh well, you mean the usercount at the forum?
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:48:47] <spiekey>	the mailing list has like 30 posts a month.
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:48:53] <mbraun>	http://www.open-xchange.org/cgi-bin/simpleforum.cgi
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:48:59] <mbraun>	these was the forum used since march
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:49:03] <spiekey>	thats hiw many you get in 1h in ubuntu or apache
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:52:04] <mbraun>	well... you have to difference, there are some community members that just want to obtain software for free to use it in their company to make money with it. Other (some say the minority) is really interested in that project and likes to support it with contributions of any way
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:53:01] <spiekey>	mbraun: sure. But sometimes ppl who make money with it, commit stuff, too.
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:54:34] <mbraun>	i dont want so forbid anyone to make money with open-source software, the whole stack which is "below" the ox application is GPL software, too
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:55:20] <mbraun>	but i think that 200 encuraged people are better than 1000 that only want to obtain something
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:55:45] <mbraun>	contribution are not only development work, just thinks like translation, bug reporting - stuff like that is very important too
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:59:26] <mbraun>	as you may read from the old forum some users left the community because there were no updates, not much care from ox
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [21:59:48] <mbraun>	this was because we developed hyperion but we couldn't say this to anyone
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [22:13:04] <spiekey>	...sorry..got tele..
[Thu Mar 29 2007] [22:19:24] <mbraun>	hehe np ;)
