[quote="imnotpc"]OK, how about this eveyone:

- We agree to merge the Compiz-Extra and Beryl communities and code as an unnamed "composite community"

- The Compiz core and the Beryl core are merged into a common package called compiz which is hosted on the fdo site.

- We host the merged Compiz-Extra and non-core Beryl code on a neutral server.

- We maintain separate forums and sites until we prune and merge the forums.

- Once we have a united forum (which is really our communities) we discuss the development of new user focused site and a name for that site.

- We consolidate the combined communities and code on the new site leaving the current compiz site to focus on the needs of the Compiz-Core developers.

this is a great plan.
just to make sure everyone is talking about the same thing (because i saw some confusion about it in some posts):

- Compiz-Core: a core of a WM. it isn't really a WM by it's own, because it isn't very usable without some plugins / decorators / etc. different WMs can be built around compiz-core, which means different sets of plugins / decorators / etc.
Compiz-Core doesn't provide any plugin by itself.

- Compiz-Extras: a WM based around Compiz-Core. just set of plugins, decorators, and some other apps that are built around Compiz-Core, that together make a complete feature-full WM.

- Merge:
beryl sends patches of their changes to compiz-core. this is already WIP and is working quite well. no rename on this part, compiz stays compiz.

On the extras part, beryl has made lots of changes, a lot more than it made in the core. on this part, beryl contributes a lot of code to the merged project (a lot more than compiz-extras), and it's not exactly the same "several patches" as it was with core.
the name of compiz-extras has always been a filler name (http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/compiz/2007-March/001694.html), for the sake of separating compiz-core and the WM that is built around it.
beryl has done major changes in this area, and therefore it isn't "beryl is merged into compiz-extras" but "Beryl and compiz-extras are merged together", and this is why we want a new neutral name, a clean start.

communities: the way i see it, after the separation of compiz and compiz-extras is complete, there will be no compiz community but compiz-extra community, because of the same reason why x.org doesn't have community, compiz will only be the core. of course, on this compiz-extras community people will talk about compiz, but what most of the people people will talk about is extras (because extras is the WM, compiz is only the core).
after compiz-extras and beryl merge, the communities will be merged together into the new name that is chosen for compiz-extra.
