I wish to take on the development of Migration toolkit to KOHA and its associated libraries as a part of Google's Summer of Code initiative. The
About the Project
Goal/Idea of the Project: Creation of CDS/ISIS Migration to Koha Toolkit.
The portability, ease of use, and quick development cycles makes perl a great language to be used for the Migration tool kit. With the support for MARC perl is a good language to be used for such a project.
One thing that would be very useful for the metadata handling communities would be some freely available tools for processing and generating MARC records. Whilst any general purpose computer language could be used to handle MARC records, the approach this work has taken is to start working on a MARC processing module for Perl. The reason for this is partly because Perl offers some nice modularization features and data structures that make producing an Application Programming Interface (API) relatively painless. Also it is recomended in the Project Ideas section to use perl (Another good reason is that I am reasonably good at Perl!).
Deliverables of the Project:
At the end of the program a perl based tool kit with the required utilities is going to be developed, which acn be readily deployable over a server or a client system.
Non-Code deliverables will include usage tutorials and documentation for toolkit .
Overview of Milestones, Schedule and Planning:
The Project is split up in 8 different periods as mentioned below:
1.ANALYSIS(May 20-May 31): This stage involves detailed analysis of the Koha format and the pre-requisites of the Toolkit. The best method of setting up a web-service for the same will be analyzed. Project infrastructure (CVS Repository & Website) will also be setup during this stage.
2.Bibliographic Extraction Function( June 1- June 5): This will involve thorough inrospection of how MARC and the implementation of the Bibliographic Extraction Function.
3.Creation of Other Extraction Functions (June 6 June 16) : This will involve the creation of authorities, serials, acquisitions, patron and data extraction functions respectively.
4.Utilities to handle Data Clean up, Normalization, Encoding Fixes, etc.(June 16 June 26): The different utilities will be developed in the period as mentioned. The utilities will be varying. As per the requisites the utilities will be developed.
5.A general purpose mapping utility for mapping patron and circ data into a form suitable for import (June 26 July 06).
6.A master program to manage the entire toolkit: (July 06 July 16)A Master kit with a good GUI and an easy to use interface will be formed in this period of time.
7.Other Utilities (July 16 July 26)
8.Testing and Wrap Up (July 26 August 11)The last stage of the project will involve testing of the editor and authoring of the documentation and some tutorials. The editor will be ready for deploying at the end of this stage.
Who am I??
I am a second-year undergraduate at the Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, India. I am pursuing my B.Tech. in Computer Engineering at the institute. I have been passionate about computers since my childhood and have been a free software advocate as well as a Linux,BSD user for around 2 years now.
I am also a system administrator at my university, and have had the opportunity to develop several applications that automate routine tasks at the institute. Applications that I have developed include a timetable management system, an online assignment evaluation system, and Computer Based Assignment Submission System. Such projects at my university have given me an extensive knowledge of the Perl language and web design principles in general.
I have also worked with XML extensively, particularly the DocBook format as a part of my documentation efforts for the K-Write project.
Lastly, I would like to express my deep commitment to this project and Liblime in general. I guarantee that I will take full responsibility for maintenance of the Toolkit (and any associated modules) that I create during this project. You can find more details about me and the projects that I am currently involved in, at my website. Please don't hesitate to contact me if any part of this proposal is not clear to you or if you need me to produce some sample code.
Thank you for considering this proposal, and for your time!
