* apt-get update
* apt-get install build-essential
* apt-get install mercurial
* apt-get install libx11-dev libxt-dev
* mkdir wmii-build ; cd wmii-build
* get the source for the 4 things needed for wmii
hg clone http://suckless.org/cgi-bin/hgwebdir.cgi/9base
hg clone http://suckless.org/cgi-bin/hgwebdir.cgi/dmenu
hg clone http://suckless.org/cgi-bin/hgwebdir.cgi/libixp
hg clone http://suckless.org/cgi-bin/hgwebdir.cgi/wmii
* compile libixp
cd ~/wmii-build/libixp
make
make install
* compile 9base
cd ~/wmii-build/9base
make
make install
* compile dmenu
cd ~/wmii-build/dmenu
make
make install
* compile wmii
cd ~/wmii-build/wmii
make
make install
* Add the new wmii to the /etc/alternatives info
update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-window-manager x-window-manager /usr/local/bin/wmii 70
* apt-get install xterm (or your preferred terminal)
* Optional - update-alternatives --config x-terminal-emulator -- pick 'xterm'. Doing this will allow xterm to use your .Xdefaults file.
* update your .bash_profile (or preferred shell) - add this to the bottom to get rc.wmii working and get a sane path
# My stuff
# Wmii stuff
export PLAN9=/usr/local/9
# My Path
PATH=~/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin/X11:$PLAN9/bin
* log out and log back in. At this point you can issue a startx and should get wmii up and running.
