Industrial Refridgeration
By Cameron Trafalski and David Hawkins

Mechanical refridgerators have been around for over 100 years. The food industries highly depend on refridgeration to be at its finest to keep their buisness running successfully. Buisnesess rely on refridgeration to keep their food at its freshest with cool storage. The way refrigeraters work hasnt changed much and still relies on the same basic principles whilst keeping into consideration cost, efficiency, and environmental impact. Refrigerators work by three main components; compressors, evaporators and condensors.

In the compressor section, the coolant passes through the compressor after going through...

After the coolant is heated up by the compresser, it passes through the condenser. In this stage, the coolant is condensed to a liquid in an air cooled condenser, which is at the rear of the refrigerator. After going through the condenser, it then passes through to an expansion valve to where it can be maintained by the evaporator.

With the evaporation part, a refrigerant is vaporised and the heat is absorbed through the inside of the walls of the refrigerator which cools down the inside of the refrigerator. The evaporator temperature is maintained at below -5C and it is required that it stays at 37.5 psi from the compressor to maintain its low temperature to keep the refrigerator working properly. Then after the coolant passes through the compressor to to evaporation valve, it is then cooled again and passes through the insides of the walls to repeat the process.

Some different refrigeration systems use mainly LP gas. This is done using the strong solution of the ammonia which is heated by a gas flame and then it escapes as a vapour to get to the condenser. at this stage it now becomes a liquid by being absorbed back into the water soloution rather than going through the condenser in the conventional system. After becoming a liquid again it goes through the evaporator to make it a stronger soloution where it then flows back through the cycle thus cooling down the refrigerator.
