used to work at a canadian cable internet tech support line for customers in the states. I got a call from one of the most unfortunately stupid lady in the world.

"Hi, I'm having a lot of trouble with my id-10-T configuration." Id-10-t is an industry in-joke. When somebody is an idiot, we joke about telling them to buy an id10t chip.

"...um, excuse me? where did you hear that?"

"I've been dealing with this for over a week. I called your company, they told me I needed to buy an id-10-T chip. So I went to best buy and tried to buy one."

While trying not to explode I calmly asked "what did they tell you?"

"He said that people didn't use id-10-T chips anymore, they are built into the computer, and you only need to configure them properly. He told me to call my computer manufacturer."

"And I assume you did so?"

"Yes, and they told me to call microsoft!"

"And I assume you did so?"

"Yes! And they told me to call you! This is INSANE!"

At this point I lost it. I was part of an INTERNATIONAL practical joke on some poor unsuspecting sap. I didn't have the heart to keep this thing going. After a short hold period (during which I destroyed myself laughing) I came back to the customer.

"I've got something to tell you, and it's really not going to make you happy."

"What?! You are sending me off again!?!?!

"No miss, I'm afraid the people who were working with you before were playing a cruel joke on you. If you have a pen and a piece of paper handy, could you write out id-10-T for me?"

It was her turn to fucking lose it. I listened to her scream for probably 5 straight minutes. I had her on speaker phone the entire time so the whole row could hear it.

Turns out she just needed to install some usb drivers. That took about 45 minutes.
