<-- p13 has quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
<capiira> sometimes after few secs sometimes after few minutes
<plutonas> laughzilla: at me, i installed it yesterday, i directly got to the login prompt
<plutonas> entered root there, and was ready
<capiira> then i need to open the mixer in gnome and move the slider to hear sound again

<plutonas> capiira: this is really strange... first time i hear it
<capiira> yeah
<plutonas> laughzilla: well, did you reboot after the installation?
<capiira> but its working
<capiira> but what does freebsd use?
<laughzilla> plutonas yes the box did reboot after install and i had taken out the cd ro y
--> superbofh (n=sysop@81.84.199.76) has joined ##freebsd
<laughzilla> that is i took out the cd b4 it rebooted
<capiira> oss alsa esd or something else?
<plutonas> capiira: i do not know, have not heard sound on freebsd yet
<capiira> hehe ok
<plutonas> laughzilla: ok, and what happened then?
<plutonas> did you see the freesbd ascii logo, and pressed 1 there?
<laughzilla> it just loaded up to an OK prompt telling me to hit ? for a list of commands
<laughzilla> i did not see the freebsd ascii logo
<laughzilla> should i reboot agin?
<Bankai_> laughzilla: you on a sparc machine ?
<laughzilla> and if so what command should i use for that from this odd kernel loading menu. it'ws an amd duron 1.2 ghz with 500 mb ram, bankai
<plutonas> ok prompt?
<laughzilla> plutonas yes an OK prompt
<laughzilla> ie: instead of /path/: i see OK
<plutonas> well doesnt it ask anything at the ok prompt?
<plutonas> oh
<laughzilla> nope
<plutonas> laughzilla: i dont know if it has something to do with the freebsd boot loader, i use grub
<Bankai_> only time i've never seen an OK prompt is on OBP
--> Gonzalez (n=herb@212.30.210.39) has joined ##freebsd
<laughzilla> it doesn''t ask antything, and the ? commands show a bunch of command options like load a module or kernel, etc, only7 i don't kno what to load
<plutonas> but rebooting again is worth trying, you dont have anything to lose
<laughzilla> i set up the boot manager during the install procrss
<laughzilla> how do i reboot properly from this point?
<plutonas> ah, then that is probably the freebsd boot loader
<laughzilla> yes
--> bkudria (n=bkudria@66-109-40-44.tvc-ip.com) has joined ##freebsd
<laughzilla> looks like a boot loader how is that used properly?
<bkudria> phx: aha, su exec is in Makefile.modules...
<plutonas> i cant help you then, never have seen the loader! if it a grub problem
<laughzilla> thx :) helpful appreciated
<bkudria> phx: so, can i do a make reinstall to recompile and include this module, without breaking anything? how *would* i add in this module?
<plutonas> if it was*
<weirdmonster> laughzilla: are you pressing any keys while it is booting?
<laughzilla> no, weirdomaster, i wasn't
<weirdmonster> do you know what the freebsd ascii menu looks like?
<laughzilla> so i rebooted with 'reboot' and it loaads again to OK prompt and above that it says 'couldn't load kernel ... press ? for a list of commands or 'help' for detailed help.'
<laughzilla> weirdmonster yes i have seen the ascii menu b4
<laughzilla> ob freebsd 4.x
<weirdmonster> are you seeing it this time?
<weirdmonster> you are using fbsd 4.x ???
<-- bkudria has quit (Remote closed the connection)
<laughzilla> no i did not see it this time except during the first time that i put in the install cd at the start of install procedure , weirdmonster
<appa_x> load ad(0,a)/kernel
<laughzilla> i am using 6.1 now
<laughzilla> that is what i just finished installiong new on a freshly formatted drive
<laughzilla> thx appa_ i will try that
<laughzilla> appa_x even
<appa_x> laughzilla Alter 0,a to suit your disk layout.
<laughzilla> yes my bsd os is on ad0
<appa_x> The disk is assumed since you got into the loader
<-- capiira has quit ("Leaving")
<laughzilla> what is the ,a ?
<appa_x> So the 0 refers to the slice, a is the partition / is on.
<laughzilla> ok
<laughzilla> yes it uses the default partition names
<appa_x> Also, there is a 'bug' in the installer for 6.1, in that if you don't select any distrobutions it won't install a kernel.
<laughzilla> sys it can't find ad(o,a)kernel
<laughzilla> i mean it can't find ad(0,a)/kernel
<appa_x> There probably isn't a kernel there then.
<laughzilla> yes probably not
<laughzilla> ut i just installed one so how can i find it?
<appa_x> It's the number 0, not the letter o
<laughzilla> yes i know i did put the number 0 and not the lettter
<laughzilla> this keyboard on this other box is just in a really bad way
<laughzilla> it's at a bad angle cuz of 3d geometry
<appa_x> ah, ok...well, try load ad(0,a)/boot/kernel/kernel
<laughzilla> ok
<laughzilla> trying
<laughzilla> there is no /boot/kernel
<laughzilla> i looked in /boot and saw some things like loader.conf and mnt
<laughzilla> did not see kernel
<laughzilla> whag other dir might it be in?
<appa_x> If it exists that's where it will be.
<laughzilla> gah
<appa_x> Sounds like you tripped the bug in sysinstall.
<appa_x> Easy solution is to reinstall and make sure you select a distibution set this time.
<laughzilla> i did not get to type in sysinstall .... thats the strep i was about to get to
<laughzilla> i picked the standard install
<laughzilla> for disttribution
<appa_x> Try again I guess.
<laughzilla> yh]
<laughzilla> yah
<laughzilla> well thanks i appreciated it :)
<laughzilla> when in doubt .... do over
<appa_x> yw
<laughzilla> yo ho ho ...and a joyous festivus to all!

<appa_x> Well, assuming no show-stoppers with RC2 looks like they are planning 6.2-RELEASE in ~ 2 weeks.
