intro:
old lady neighbor gets herself an old thinkpad (700mhz) with no OS installed.she asks me to come upstairs and have a look. on the way up we meet another neighboor (approx 23yrs imo) and he joins us.
i tell him it wont boot off cd we need a bootable floppy disk with cddrivers.
he gets his win95 bootdisk from upstairs.
floppy seems broken, so i say that. he says "that cant be, floppys dont just break, try b: instead of a:".
we try booting from hdd, its dos only with NO progs/tools at all.
he says try xcopy a:\ c:\ (still with the unreadable floppy inside....), i say that wont work, xcopy is a dos tool from windows, and its not on the hdd (as i show im with dir). he says "no xcopy is a dos command just like format. no programms needed" and once again he bugs me about using b: instead of a: .....
he gets his XP Home RECOVERY cd, i say you also have a crack? because recoverys are for the PC that you bought, she will need to activate again since she doesnt have the exact same computer. he says "no thats not true, that has nothing to do with hardware".
he goes back upstair to get another cd, a tool CD from some magazine, i ask how is that supposed to help, he says "it has powerDVD, so it must have CDROM drivers" - huh?????
i go downstairs and get my windows ME bootdisk, and boot from it, start X:\i386\winnt.exe off of his recovery cd. i do quickformat instead of the normal one, and he says "you should have done normal format because we just had an error" , i say "no, it was just dos with nothing included, and you floppy was broken"
he says she will need the antivirus he uses, it scans all website and things she opens/visits and she wont get infected. then he says he has to format every 14-30 days (i wonder why, muha), i say: i use linux, i reinstall when i want to try out a different distro, and dont have any antivirus installed because viruses/trojans etc are mainly for windows users, he says nothing.
